Jabber and Phone said that this should go here.
So what is Linguistics? It's the study of human language. That does not mean that one has to know very many languages to study it. There are people who just study English. So what exactly does one study? One studies the structure of language. So one studies things like syntax-sentence structure, morphology-word structure and phonology-the sounds of language. This might overlap a little with etymology, but etymology is more of the study of word roots and how they changed over time. Linguistics study the structure of words.

Did I make sense to anyone?

That's a good start. Just remember that linguistics is not the study of language throughout time, not at all anymore. Linguistics as it is today attempts to study language as a whole and how it is actually spoken by the users of said language.

And how it's evolving and the impact of globalization. (That's a pretty big thing right now, here.)

But I really love linguistics. And that was the one thing I wish I could minor in,

Pretending in words was too tentative, too vulnerable, too embarrassing to let anyone know.
