“This,” she said, her blue eyes shining with tears, “is your fault. You can’t take back what you said, you can’t apologize enough times, you didn’t even realize the effect of your actions.”
He stood there, his face wrought with emotion he could not display.
She continued, “I guess I can’t blame you. As I said, you didn’t realize, didn’t see, didn’t care. Or if you did… Well now. That’s so highly unlikely, I feel stupid even saying it out loud. As for the number of times that thought ran through my head, it only caused hurt and anguish. Not a feeling of stupidity. Saying things out loud forces you to harshly compare them to reality and you suddenly see how wrong you’ve been all along.”
He had slipped down the wall and was crouching, clutching his knees.
“You used me,” her voice echoed around the room.
He wished his heart had a mouth, so it could use the words that his brain seemed incapable of finding, the words needed to explain. Explain everything.
“You need to see that it’s too late now. I don’t want you to have to ever see me again, or I you. So I’m leaving. Do not try to follow me or contact me. It’s done. Over.”
He gaped at her, and whispered, “What?”
“Goodbye.”
The screen closed and he was left staring at his wallpaper again. The picture seemed like it had been taken a few lifetimes ago. She was smiling, her face was not tear stained and distraught like he had just seen it.
He had loved her.
But he had no words to say it.
Goodbye had already been said.
She was gone.
There was no going back.
