Chapter 17

My babies… My babies… I can’t loose them, I can’t. It’s because I didn’t exercise enough, or I didn’t eat healthy. I should have been more cautious. God, she took a deep breath in through her nose and out through her mouth; these contractions hurt. Maybe it’s not that bad, maybe… Please let my babies be healthy, ten little toes and ten little fingers. I need them. Oh, God, what if their hearts aren’t pumping enough blood? What if their lungs aren’t working? What if they aren’t fully developed? It’s all my fault. I was supposed to protect them. I was supposed to keep them safe; now they’re in danger, and it’s all my fault.

Her eyes grew wide as she grasped the bed railing, and another contraction flamed through her back muscles and around to her abdomen. Gary tried to rub her back, but he too, was scared. His hands were trembling and unconfident in their actions.

“Stop, Gary, just stop.” She looked up at the ultrasound machine and tried to lay on her back again.

The doctor took the cold gel and slowly placed it upon Isabella’s swollen abdomen; it felt as though she was plunging into frozen lake water. She shuddered as Dr. Sage looked for the two babies on the screen.

“Ms. Hill, do you see how this baby’s head is pointing towards the birth canal and the other one is not?” Dr. Sage asked, pointing at the screen.

The sweat gathered along Isabella’s forehead; she wanted to scream. “Yes, I do.”

The doctor taps the screen, “this child is breech, and it is dangerous for her to be born vaginally. I am going to order an emergency cesarean section. I’ll be back in a few minutes to see how far along you are progressing.”

Doctor Sage leaves the room, and closes the door, an eerie silence followed. I don’t want to have a c-section, but my baby… my poor baby. If she comes out vaginally she’ll struggle for breath; she’ll suffocate. Her little brain won’t get enough oxygen… The silence was broken by Isabella’s sobs. She took a sharp breath into her lungs as a contraction followed the path of the others, and destroyed all of her thoughts and replaced them with nothing but thoughts of hurt.

“Babe, don’t hold your breath. Breathe in and out.” Gary demonstrates the way the doctor had showed them how she should breathe through contractions.

She turned away from him. It was none of his concern; he wasn’t the one that was pregnant, the one having their body put through hell to birth a child that’s in danger. She arched her back and slowly let the breath out through gritted teeth, as the contraction went away.
Gary sat in silence, patiently waiting for her to speak. She was the one that had to be cut open and pulled apart, so if she was a little stressed out he could understand that. He heard her let out a crushed moan as she clutched the bed railing. He watched, on the monitor, as the contraction hit it’s peak and slowly declined.

***

The doctor came back in, taking long immediate strides. He looked at a few of the machines, noting the babies heartbeats and Isabella’s blood pressure, and hummed, nodding to himself. “Everything seems to be in working order. How are the contractions?”

“They hurt,” she took a deep breath, “It’s like they are on top of each other.”

“Good. Lets see how far we have to go.”

Doctor Sage put her legs back up in the stirrups, and felt for how far the baby was away from the birth canal.

“Well, it seems as though it’s time to say hello to your children. Are you ready?” Doctor Sage eased down the blanket and stirrups.

After a small contraction blazed through Isabella’s body she took a deep breath, and said, “as ready as I’ll ever be.”

“Okay, I’ll have the nurse prep you in a few minutes.” Doctor Sage walked out of the room.

Isabella threw her head back upon the pillow and unclenched her sweaty, warm hands. In a few hours she would be a mother. I’m going to see my babies soon. I want them to be ok, they have to be. God, this hurts. “Gary, make the pain stop, please,” she whispered. By now her hands were clenched around the bed railing, and her abdomen hardened with each sharp breath she took.

Gary leaned in, “Here, take my hand.” he held out his hand for her to grab.

Her knuckles turned snow white as she gripped Gary’s hand for the duration of the contraction. He kissed her forehead, and gingerly rubbed his thumb along the out line of her fingers.

“Soon it’ll be over baby, real soon,” Gary said as a nurse in bright pink scrubs came in holding a tray of utensils she was going to use on Isabella. She gulped, they’re going to use that big needle on me?

“Hi, I’m nurse White, and I will be prepping you for surgery. Do you have any questions about what’s going to happen?” Nurse White asked, addressing Gary and Isabella before she attended to her tools.

“Ummm… What is going to happen?” Isabella asked, the lines on her forehead became apparent, and she began biting her nails.

“Well, an anesthesiologist will administer this epidural into your back, close to your spinal cord. It will numb you from your abdomen down. Then I will place a catheter into your bladder to drain all your urine during the procedure. Once we get you to the operating room the doctor will wash your lower abdomen with a special disinfectant; then make a six to eight inch incision into your abdomen, and then another incision into your uterus. The babies will be taken out through the opening made by these two incisions. Do you have any questions?” Nurse White asked.

“Uh… I don’t think so.” Isabella’s head was swarming with questions and thoughts of uncertainty, but she didn’t want to waste any more time. So, she let the questions float through her brain, making her more nervous with every passing second.

Hi Rascalover,

This chapter is good and it sounds very realistic even though..I've never been pregnant lol
One part seems to contradict itself. When you reveal Gary's thoughts, you say that he is going to let Isabella make the decision but then when she does make the decision he complains about it. Why? Does he want to have more control over the situation even though he knows it is none of his business?

It''s pretty short for a chapter, no? I am gonna read the continuation, oh and I probably should read the previous chapters too...lol

Hi Tifany. I am so glad that I was online when you gave me the PM.
You are going to be happy to know that I could find only to mistakes in whole which is a great improvement from the starting chapters.

Please let my babies be ok.
I think the word 'ok' is way too informal to be used in the story. So either make it 'okay' or 'all right' or soemthing else hat you think is appropriate.

He looks at a few of the machines noting the babies' heartbeats and Isabella’s blood pressure, and hums and nods to himself.

Now as you're heading towards the end of th novel I think I should give you some tips I would ahve used had I been completing my novel, which seems a long way now.
1. Read the novel when it's complete from the reader's point of view not a writer's. Ask yourself wheteher you'll be interested in paying for this book and read it.If it's worth it. NAd don't give a biased answer. :D
2. Then read it again chapter-by-chapter very carefully this time. And then make changes you think should be made. Before it, read all the important reviews you have received so far. Make appropritate changes.
3. I think your starting chapters were very weak in comparison to the ending ones. The readers would like to see consistency, so just think about it.
4. There might be some words of which you could use synonyms to mek it more impressive.

Now I think the lbour pain was very well-written of and it seemed that you are a doctor who knows everything about it. So good job done! And please work on the points I gave you above.

I can’t lose them

You need to be more careful with loose/lose and other similarly spelled words, like breath/breathe. You've got a couple of mistakes of this type scattered throughout this chapter.

another contraction flamed through her backside

"Flamed" really isn't the word to use; ditto with "backside". Essentially, backside = butt, and contractions mainly involve the belly and back muscles; not so much the butt.

One thing that really stood out to me in a not-good way was how you kept jumping around in both point of view and tense. Is this written in past-tense or present? Whose viewpoint are we following? Isabella's, Gary's, or the doctor's? In both cases, the jumping around is confusing.

Another thing I noticed was that the contractions seem to come on and disappear whenever it's convenient. The longer a woman is in labor, generally the more often the contractions come, yet there are huge gaps in between contractions that allow Isabella to bite her nails and have a completely uninterrupted conversation with the nurse when, moments before, she was having a contraction seemingly every few seconds.

Concerning the C-section: the decision on whether or not to have one lies with the doctor; not the mother. Breech births are dangerous not only for the child, but the mother, and so a doctor would be fully within his rights to, and is considered irresponsible if he doesn't, order a C-section.

The last thing I'd like to point out is that this chapter ended abruptly. Isabella is nervous. The end. A better place to end the chapter might be as she is being wheeled out of the room. Since she's leaving Gary behind, there's a natural sense of an ending or finality, while there' s also a sense of anticipation as she's going into the surgery.

Overall, you need to fix the grammar and factual errors. Also, taking a closer look at your word choice, pacing, tense, and point of view is a good idea.

Gary gets interrupted by Isabella’s quick decision.
You switched tenses here.

“Babe, don’t hold your breath. Breath in and out.” Gary demonstrates the way the doctor had showed them how she should breath through contractions.

"breathe"

the color of plums, the kind your grandma has lingering in the house for way too long.

This felt really out of place.

“Um… I don’t think so.”

All these "ums!" You'd think she'd be a little less hesitant considering how much pain she's in.

Isabella’s head was swarming with questions and thoughts of uncertainty, but she didn’t want to waste any more time. So, she let the questions float through her brain, making her more nervous with every passing second.

Like Ky said, this is abrupt. Which is good since we want to read more, but it also feels almost random.

Overall:

I like this. It does feel rather first-drafty to me, but I like the story. My biggest complaint was probably still the characters, since they still don't feel very unique.

You've done a good job making the doctor seem somewhat realistic, but that could seem a bit more real as well because I can't seem to imagine this actually happening in a hospital.

It could use a bit of grammar and style work, but I would suggest waiting to deal with that until you've finished the whole thing. I made the mistake of going through a novel very carefully and then ended up having to cut large portions of it.

Congrats for getting so far into the narrative. I often give up halfway through first drafts. i can't wait to read more!

Hey Tiffany. Here to review, again. :D

Maybe it’s not that bad, maybe…
This gets a bit of weird here. Do you mean the contractions aren't that bad? But I don't think that any lady suffering with these would say this. On the other side, I believe that it is the babies you are talking about, right? If so, you should write 'situation' in place of 'it' as you have been talking about the contractions in the previous line, and it might confuse the reader.

Please let my babies be healthy, ten little toes and ten little fingers. I need them. Oh, God, what if their hearts aren’t pumping enough blood? What if their lungs aren’t working? What if they aren’t fully developed?
I like the lines. They are perfect to show and display her worries and tensions.

Gary tried to rub her back, but he too, was scared.
Commas here are forced. Like you can take out the comma before was and also put it after he.

I want them to be ok, they have to be.
There was a line like this before also and in my previous review I said that it shouldn't be 'ok', but 'okay', 'normal', or something. I saw that you changed it to 'healthy', which is also fine.

I think it was more or less the same, but I spotted errors that I hadn't the last time, so it is definitely better for you. The other thing that I would like to say is that when Nurse White says how the operation would be carried out, I would like to see more emotions in her tone, even though she won't be terrified or something, but show how her facial expressions are or how she is sympathizing with her. Also, when all this while Nurse is telling this, I would like to see some expressions from Gary, and how he is. Just wait while Nurse is narrating and make this seem something informal, not much though.
I hope you get the gist, and if you're confused, PM me. :)

Can't wait to read what happens next,
