I sure could use some, specifically from people who have written them themselves. I prefer first0hand experience over articles.

What should I avoid? What do I need to have?

Some questions first.

Why are they kissing? Is it because they like each other romantically? Is it because of a dare? Are they just kissing out of curiosity? Is there an ulterior motive for the kiss? Why the kissers are kissing will affect how they react during the kiss.

What conditions are they kissing under? Have they been together for a long time? Are they being forced to kiss? Is this the last kiss before one of them goes away? Pretty similar to the first question, and again, it affects how they'll react.

What kind of a kiss is it? A quick peck? A deep French? A sloppy wet one?

What are the characters focusing on? In the case of an ulterior motive, one of the characters is probably going to be more focused on their ulterior motive than the kiss itself.

As far as what you need to avoid/have, it depends on the story and type of kiss. If the story is better with you going into minute detail on every aspect of the kiss, like if you were writing a lusty romance, go into minute detail. If it's just a casual kiss between a longtime couple, then just a mention of the kiss is needed, and any more is overkill.

well first u need to set the scene
Are they in the middle of an event of some kind?
Are the characters alone? What events led up to them being together?
Are they outside or indoors?
Are they standing or sitting?
Is anyone else nearby? If so, are they a witness to the kiss or do you need to have that person move out of the scene first?
also you need to explain how close or far the two couples are like are they on the dancefloor?
and most importantly the 5 senses
touch-describing how the person feels like their hair, or their lips is it soft or hard?
smell-describing them if theyre wearing any perfume or cologne
hear-eh >> im not gonna explain that one XD
see-picturing the person in your eyes
taste- not gonna explain that one either >>
Happiness is a perfume you can not pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself <3

I think it also matters if it's the person's first kiss. Because it can be different if the person knows what they're doing or not.

But some basic tips:
-if you're going to describe it in detail, don't get bogged down with words. Usually, it's more about the sensation than where the person hands are, or what exactly is happening. So try not to overexplain and just portray how the character feels about it (surprise, excitment, lust, etc.)
-try writing it out in a few ways and pick the one that works the best.
-look at how authors write about it in certain books, especially if there's a situation similar to the one you're writing about.
-think about what the character would do, like would (s)he bump noses, or laugh, or would they get shy after, or something like that.

Um, that's all I can think of for now. I hope those tips helped. :)

There's not much I can say without repeating what other people above have said. But there is one thing I must say, if I hear about someone's tongue going down someone else's throat, the book is closing. Just like sex scenes, there is no need to get too graphic with anything.

My life's goal is to end up between YWS quotes on bottom of the page, so some part of me will be able to live forever here.
