“I need three more like this.” Edward said holding up an odd looking Lego. Alan glanced at the Lego then began to look for them in the large Lego tub.
“You still haven’t answered my question.” Edward just shrugged in reply. “Come on Ed! Why won’t you tell me?” Alan begged his big brother.
“Because…”
“Because why?”
“Just because okay!”
Alan went quiet once more. He didn’t want to argue with Edward, and yet he really wanted to know what was going on between Mom and Dad. Slowly digging through the tub, Alan wondered on what could be going on between them. “Are they going to get a divorce?”
“What?” Edward jumped at the question. “No! Of course they’re not. What put an idea like that in your head?”
“Well you won’t tell me the truth of what’s going on, so I just guessed.”
Seeing that he wasn’t going to give up Edward placed his galactic space ship that he was building on to one side and turn toward Alan. “Look, Mom and Dad just have a few issues that they need to work out that’s all. They’re not going to get a divorce.”
“How do you know?” Alan asked still unsatisfied.
Trying hard not to lose his temper with Alan’s never ending questions, Edward sighed, “I just know.” Spotting one of the Lego pieces he needed, Edward turned back to building his ship.
“Do you promise?” Alan’s voice broke through his thoughts.
“Promise what?” He asked only half listening.
“Promise that they won’t get a divorce.”
“ I…” Edward stopped himself from saying any more, for he knew he could not promise that. With all that had been going on between Mom and Dad a divorce seemed like the right road to take. But how was he supposed to tell his five year old bother that if they did get a divorce it won’t be such a bad thing? “Alan, sometimes…things work out for the best and other times they don’t. Do you understand what I’m saying?” he asked hoping he would.
Alan stared at Edward with a sad look, “So they are getting a divorce?”
“NO!” Edward quickly replied, “I mean, there is a chance…but there’s also a chance that things will work out.”
Alan shifted the Lego tub and picked through it a bit, a large tear dripped off the end of his nosed. He hoped that Edward had not seen it, for he wanted to be brave like him. He tried to look on the bright side, but things seemed to lean more to the darker side.
Edward had seen the tear, but instead of scolding Alan he reached over and put his arm around him. A tear ran down his cheek as well as he comforted his brother
