The Crush
"There once was a girl who had it all, except him"
I’m used to getting what I want. I’ve been spoiled ever since I was little. My father’s a true rags to riches story. He and my mom found out I was coming along when they were twenty-four years old. They weren’t rich, and they definitely weren’t stable. My father worked at a pizza joint and my mom was a cashier at a grocery store. After I was born my mom packed her things and split. She left behind a note citing that she was too young to be a mother and that she wanted to see the world.
My father was heartbroken; he was there with me all by himself. His parents weren’t much help. He basically was down on his luck. So one day he took a chance and bought a lottery ticket. That night, he won. He won big, eighty million dollars big to be exact.
Since then it’s been my father and me. Of course I’m a daddy’s girl. My father spoiled me rotten growing up. I was his best friend, the only person he could trust. It made me feel important to him; it made me feel needed and wanted. I loved my father dearly; he stuck by me while my mom had bailed. It really meant a lot to me that he loved me and wanted me even though at the time he couldn’t afford to raise me.
I guess I could say my father was my idol, my god, my reasoning for life.
On the morning of my first day of my senior year I woke up with a sense of change in the air. Something new was going to happen. I couldn’t put my finger on what it was however.
After my shower I put on my robe and headed down to the kitchen. My father was with his new wife Laura at the kitchen table.
“Hey Bris, want some breakfast?” my father asked.
“That depends, did the step monster make it?” I asked.
“Bristol Nicole,” my father said sternly.
“Ooh, the middle name, really scary Daddy,” I said as I grabbed some yogurt from the fridge.
“We’ve been through this, you will respect Laura,” said my father.
“Right, it’s hard to respect someone when they’re only two years older than you,” I said.
“I’m five years older than you, you’re only seventeen,” Laura cut in.
“Whatever,” I mumbled as I headed to my room.
This was my father’s first marriage and Laura was twenty-two years old. She at least came from money, so she wasn’t a gold digger. I just didn’t like that she was getting all of my father’s attention.
I may almost be eighteen but that doesn’t mean that I’m ready to cut the umbilical cord just yet.
I went to my room and picked out the perfect first day outfit: a designer lace spaghetti strap top over my favorite designer skinny jeans, along with some black Manolos and a small black leather jacket. There was no need to over do it on the first day like some kids. I remembered back to last year when certain girls came wearing tacky neon colored jeans and neon t-shirts, the first day mattered, your outfit said a lot about you. So there was no way in hell I’d be seen wearing anything less than perfect.
After I got dressed I headed to school.
I was excited to get to school. It was finally the year that counted and really mattered: senior year. Senior year brought the best proms, the best homecomings, the best parties, and the best boyfriends. Though I already had a boyfriend; he was the first person I met up with as soon as I got to school.
“Hey babe,” Logan Chadwick smiled as he kissed me. Logan was my hot rugby-playing boyfriend. He was extremely handsome with his perfect tan skin, dirty blonde hair, pretty green eyes, and gorgeous buff body. Logan Chadwick was the most sought after guy our freshmen year; even now when we were dating girls still lusted after him.
“Are you excited about this new year?” I smiled.
“Oh yeah, I remember your promise,” Logan grinned pleasantly.
“Is that all you think about?” I rolled my eyes as I smiled.
Logan was talking about my high school promise. I promised myself my freshmen year that I’d wait to my senior year to lose my virginity. And ever since Logan and I started dating my sophomore year he’d been anxious to sleep with me.
“Of course,” Logan beamed.
“Just be a little patient, it’ll happen,” I assured.
“I trust that it will. I love you Bris,” Logan draped his arm around my neck as my best friend Jane met up with us.
Jane Simms was my bestest friend in the world. She had been ever since I first ever got my period in the seventh grade and was too afraid to tell my father. Jane was the Thelma to my Louise, the Woodward to my Bernstein, the Corey to my Corey, the Demi to my Selena; we were partners in crime. We shopped, tanned, partied, and cried together. If I needed someone other than my father I’d call Jane first.
Jane stood before us sporting a freshly cut bob hairstyle; it looked great with her auburn hair. Jane was quite fashionable. She was wearing a cute long pink top with a vest over top along with designer jeans and pink heels. Her bag was a very chic Nicole Miller bag. All together Jane was ready for the first day of school.
“So, cheerleading tryouts are tomorrow. You excited?” Jane smiled to me.
“Definitely, head spot is mine,” I said confidently.
“Oh please Bris, there are going to be tons of girls gunning for that position,” Logan said realistically. “What makes you think you have it in the bag?”
“Um, hello, I’m Bristol Nicole Dawson, I’m going to get that position,” I said proudly.
“Well then, I guess I’ll be captain of the rugby team then, huh?” Logan teased.
“Of course, you’re Logan Allen Chadwick,” I was being supportive. You had to dream big to be big. Though Logan was already a shoo’-in for captain. He was very athletic and great at rugby.
“Exactly,” Jane giggled as she agreed.
