CHAPTER FIVE

The house was incredibly enormous, and made me feel like the insignificant figure I was. The driver helped me bring my bags to the large oak doors. "Good night miss." Was all the driver said before he left me alone. The light that was illuminating the giant concrete porch was dull, and increased the lonely feeling. It was probably midnight, and there were no signs of life inside. I didn't want to knock, I knew that it would make at least one person upset if not everyone.

I didn't know how many people resided in the house, only that I was to be the youngest one. Taking a deep breath, my arm raised and my hand formed into a fist. I knocked roughly on the giant door making my knuckles throb. I exhaled and took a step back. My teeth clenched and my muscles tensed. Then a light flicked on and the door began to unlock.

I was greeted by an older woman reaching her mid-sixties. He soft face and dull smile made me feel a little better about the situation. Her silvery hair was tied up in a tight bun, and she wore a robe covering up her night gown. I didn't know whether to smile or just keep the same straight face as she did. I decided on the smile, to ease the awkwardness. "Hell, I'm Bethany. Is this the Dunstan residence?"

"Oh, hello dear. My it's late, we've been waiting up for you but it just got too late! Oh my I bet you had quite a trip!" She belched out an obnoxious laugh and summoned me in. I grasped my bags and entered.

The inside was just as impressive as the outside. There were probably three or four stories to that place. I stood there in the center , gazing upward, and surrounded by marble floors. "Allow me to show you to your room, miss. You probably could use a good night sleep after all that traveling." She smiled at me gently as I followed her up the magnificent stair case coated with red carpet. "By the way my name is Jane, I am the house keeper. You can call me in for all of your needs."

My room was on the second floor. The door was incredibly tall and so was the ceiling in my room. My bed had a canopy over it and the comforter and pillows were dark red and gold. It was also equipped with a fireplace, a vanity, a dresser, and a personal bathroom. "Go ahead an get some sleep, see you in the morning." The door echoed as it shut and the lonely feeling creeped back. I plopped down on the floor, as the shadow of the window made by the moon covered me. It wasn't long until I fell asleep, still on the floor.

I woke up to the strangest thing, my door opened and a woman screaming, "MARK! MAAAARK! MARK GET IN HERE!" I heard running footsteps and my door swinging open even more. I was almost positive I was dreaming the sounds so I kept my eyes shut.

"What? What's going on?" A deep voice said. Then I felt two large hands on each of my shoulders shake me, then and arm slip under my head and prop me up. I was so incredibly tired still, but this wasn't a dream. Something was happening to me. My eyes blinked open to find two green eyes filled with concern staring at me. It definitely wasn't a dream.
"OH MY GOD," I gasped. I quickly shifted my self out of the grasp of the man.
"Are you ok?!" I recognized the voice from the previous screaming one and looked to see who it was. I saw Jane, with an intense worried expression on her face. Like she'd seen a cadaver.

"Uh, I think so." I said shakily.

"You sure?" said the man. He was handsome, no doubt about that. He had long light brown hair pulled back into a pony tail. His jaw was strong and his lips were perfectly full. He was wearing black slacks and a white dress shirt. His shoes screamed expensive and so did his shirt cuffs.

"We though something had happened to you! You were laying on the floor and I just thought..." She laughed at herself and rubbed her temples. "Oh my, were you just so exhausted that you couldn't make it to the bed?"

"Oh, yeah, I was pretty tired. Sorry to scare you." I apologized.

"That's fine dear. Breakfast is ready whenever you are." Jane smiled. I looked over to the man.

"Who...who are you?"

"Mark, Mark Dunstan. I own this place. Pleasure to meet you." His voice had the equivalent consistency of chocolate cream.

"Oh, nice to meet you. Sorry we had to meet...like this." I suddenly became conscious of my messy hair and wrinkled shirt. I was still in my jeans and my make up was most likely smeared.

Mark just smiled and followed Jane out of the room. I didn't think that being in a different country could get that awkward.
"I won't quit to become someone's old lady."
