I wake the next morning to a blinding light. The sun. I’m not prepared to face the sun today.
Why can’t it be rainy? If it was, then it’d be easier to hide myself.
After walking downstairs, I’m promptly greeted by Mom. She tosses a slice of toast at me and hurries out the door.
Guess I’ll have to find my own way to school.
I step outside the front door and trudge along the sidewalk. The streets are blocked with angry drivers screaming into their cell phones.
By the time I get to school, the bell was seconds away from ringing. My school hated when people were late. Unless you had a legitimate excuse, the office secretary wouldn’t even look at you.
I scurry into my homeroom and sink into my desk. Curious eyes stare at me
because I am never usually almost-late.
My teacher comes into the room a minute later. She spends almost ten minutes taking attendance because she doesn’t bother to look at us when she calls our names.
The bell rings a few minutes later and the tired students shift to their first class. I flow upstream and duck into my History classroom. The teacher blabbers about some guy that changed history or something. I’m too tired to pay attention.
The lunch bell better ring soon… I think as the day continues.

When I am free for lunch, I go to the cafeteria. I buy a slice of pizza and a freezing bottle of water.
I sit at a table with my friends from the drama club. I’ve been in the drama club for the past two years and have made lots of acquaintances.
“Hi Hannah,” One of the girls says. She bought breaded-cheese fingers with a side of tomato sauce. Yuck.
“Hey.” I say. I tear off a bit of the pizza and let the cheese and tomato sauce melt in my mouth.
“Can you believe that opening night is in two weeks?” Breaded cheese fingers Jenna says.
“I know. Preparation has been crazy.” I reply. I haven’t had much time since our drama teacher announced that we’d be putting off a major play for the entire school.
Before I realize it, the pizza and water have disappeared. I throw away my trash and slip out of the cafeteria.
Almost there, almost there… I sprint to the washroom and lock myself into a stall. I pull back my long, blond hair and lean over the toilet. My stomach empties and I come out of the stall. The washroom had been empty the whole time. I rinse my mouth and go back into the hallway.
When I return to the cafeteria, the girls from drama are staring at me. They’re used to me going to the washroom a lot, but they still give me strange looks.
If only they knew…
“Sorry about that… My stomach is really upset.” I lie.
My acting skills are really improving.

The thing about plummeting downhill at fifty miles an hour on a snack platter - if you realize it's a bad idea when you're halfway down, it's too late.
