I posted another Fudge Castle as chapter one and this is the second half.
Prologue: The Siege
The space above Danny was filled with passionate, desperate faces; faces of those who would die to protect his throne, and faces of those who would kill for it. Danny’s biggest advantage was that some of the soldiers would hesitate as they swung their sword toward him when they saw that he was no man, but a boy. Quickly, Danny would seize the opportunity and slice them through the ribs. He would ride on to the next soldier continue to fight, but when the soldier was truly ruthless and didn’t think twice about killing him, Danny truly had to fight his hardest and use unorthodox methods to get past him. Once, Danny crossed blades with a soldier and knew he was going to be tough to beat. The man sliced toward his chest, was blocked by Danny, and then pulled his sword over his head to deal him a powerful blow. While the soldier’s sword was in the air, Danny pulled back his sword and stabbed the soldier’s horse through the neck. The horse squealed loudly enough to make Danny wince, and it fell it agony. The soldier was trampled under the hooves of the other horses and Danny rode on.
Danny finally reached the ditch that was right in front of the tower and rode down into it.
He sighed and dismounted his horse, leaning against the tall brick tower. He swiped his hand over his brow, wiping away sweat and blood. Huffing and puffing, he took a few minutes to catch his breath then he examined his bloody sword. His stomach felt sick for a second thinking of the men he had killed, but he shook the thoughts out of his head and cleaned the sword on the grass. Then, the young boy turned around, searching for the entrance to the secret tunnel and began circling the wide tower, the grass sifting underneath his boots. Then, he saw the indentation in the brick he was looking for. He reached into his pocket and removed a round pendant from his pocket.
It was a triangle shaped object made of pure diamond with one end opened and a y- shaped piece sprouting from the angle made from the two connecting sides. There were only six such pieces in the kingdom. They were impossible to duplicate because the diamond was formed in the center of the earth and by great chance reached the surface through means of a volcano. It looked like a standard diamond, but if it was held by a chosen person it glowed with a pure, white light. Danny’s father was chosen as king, thus it glowed when he held it. When he died, the six pieces would be connected to form a flat circle frame around a large diamond which protruded from the top a bottom of the circle made by the frame. It would be passed around to the descendants of the king. When it glowed, the person who held it was crowned king or queen, for he or she was the chosen one. Danny slipped the pendant into the slot, and the stones slid aside to reveal a small door and a long, dark passageway shrouded with cobwebs. Danny peered into the darkness, and focusing his mind on the task ahead, stepped into the doorway.
It was musty inside the tunnel, and all around him Danny could hear the echoing of footsteps, screams, and scraping swords as the battle raged throughout the castle. Danny turned and pushed the heavy door closed, so he wouldn’t have any followers, but left a slight crack for a quick get-away. As he advanced through the tunnel, he kept his hand on the slimy wall beside him. He followed the wall and continued walking until he reached a dead end. If he remembered right, there was a handle on this end that pulled the door open and led into his younger sister’s room. He listened, and although there were still echoes, he couldn’t hear any fighting on this side of the wall. Slowly, he pulled the door open and peered in. The room was empty, as far as he could tell. There was a bed in the corner with white, frilly covers and a mesh draped over her bed to form her own little area. Plush rugs cushioned the floor, and dolls lay in one corner of the room.
As Danny examined this, he heard a small sniff coming from underneath the bed. Danny jumped, startled in his agitated state, and listened closely. He heard it again and ran from the tunnel to look under the bed. He knelt and lifted up the covers to peer underneath. There, curled into a ball, tears streaming down her face lay his little sister, completely terrified and bewildered. “Danny!” she cried at seeing his face. She scuttled forward, into his waiting arms. Danny held her there, whispering that it was going to be alright and gently stroking her fair hair with his hand.
Finally he said, “Listen, Lizzie, I need to find Mom and Dad and get them out of here. I need you to stay in the secret tunnel until I can escape, okay? It might be a little dark, but you must stay put, understand?” She sat up and looked at him intensely with her diamond eyes.
“Okay, Danny,” she got up and walked to the tunnel. Danny watched that she went in and walked to her door, cracking open the door and looking out into the hallway. Nobody was there, but there was blood and a shattered sword strewn across the floor. Danny looked closer, and saw the royal crest imprinted the hilt. It was his father’s sword. Danny almost fell apart then, for surely this was a sign that his parents had been taken. He crept carefully out and grabbed the hilt, tucking it into his belt. He heard shouts and footsteps in the corridor and knew it was time to leave. He bolted into his sister’s room and yanked open the door to the tunnel. Grabbing his sister’s hand, he said, “Follow me and close your eyes, okay?” she nodded and shut her eyes, and Danny quietly shut the door behind him, just as soldier’s barged into the room. He hurried down the tunnel, tightly holding his sister’s hand and running his other along the wall. With her eyes shut, she couldn’t see the darkness.
When they reached the end of the tunnel and emerged into the daylight, Danny grabbed his sister around the waist and hoisted her up onto Sheath. Danny pulled himself onto the saddle and drew his sword, digging his heels into the horse and shooting forward in a full gallop. “Hold on!” he shouted to Elizabeth. Danny rode the opposite direction he had come from, away from the raging battle and towards a gap in the fighting. He would ride for the Chocolate and Vanilla Kingdoms, the only free countries besides the Salty regions not under Danny’s father’s rule. He rode for the gap, riding faster than ever before. They dashed through the gap, galloping across the city and into the countryside. They rode until the next morning, when the darkness of night began lifting and the faint glow of the sun began to creep over the horizon in brilliant colors of purple and pink. It was then that Danny’s horse stumbled, and Danny was unable to hold on to the reins. He toppled over Sheath and struck his head one of the rocks that frequented the forests of Chocolate and Vanilla. When he awoke, he was lying on a cot with the sun streaking through the window. A young girl sat beside him watching him anxiously, and sounds of bustling came from behind a closed door. Danny looked about in a daze, and realized he couldn’t remember a thing. Danny had lost his memory, and he didn’t even remember that the girl sitting next to him was his sister.
