Haiti: How to Help

Haiti is already a desperately poor country, and the earthquake that struck earlier this week may have left 50,000 people dead (if not more). Millions more are homeless, and their government is paralyzed.

To help out, you can donate to any number of organizations. I've included a list below:

Here's a very easy way to donate just $10: text the word HAITI to 90999. It's a very small amount, but micro-transactions like it can quickly add up to a lot of money. However, it probably only works in the USA. I'm sure there are similar numbers in other countries, but I don't know what they are.

And of course, make sure you have the permission of the person paying your phone bill before donating in this manner!

I really appreciate this post! I went to Haiti in 2001, and I'm very saddened to see what the Haitian people have had to deal with. Still they maintain such high spirits! Anyway, another good way to help: if you know of any local missionaries who are back in the States - help them gather up specified supplies to bring back with them when they fly back to Haiti! This will be a big help. I know one family of missionaries and they'll need to rebuild all the schools and medical centers that were damaged. There are great ways to help these people.

Just as an update to this, some aid organizations are saying they have received more money than they can spend. So they're asking you to donate to their general funds instead. That way, money that otherwise would go unspent could go toward humanitarian efforts across the world.
