It all changed the night you cut your hair, when you
opened a portal to make-up and low-cut designer tops.
Crossing your legs, hands in pockets, newfangled music.
It gave you nothing but a new buzzword for the same life,
and forever I'll remember the original spelling - it floated
in the air when your lips were close to mine.
Bonds and bones can be broken, that's why we have a connection,
it's full of holes and painted in last century's colours, but
it's a symbol of friendship that I don't want to ruin by
attempting to redecorate. You don't drink milk that's
been in your fridge for three years just because you're thirsty,
but I'll leave you by my side because that's where I want you.
Even when you lie your head on my shoulder and laugh
at my jokes, there are people who will want us to do something more,
but you and I shouldn't listen, our hands are warm enough
from summer parties and I don't like to jump the queue.
I'm bad at starting afresh and meeting someone new is a hassle,
so I'll just sit under the stars in my position between two extremes
and wonder which one will claim me first.
