I like to imagine that the Featured Member is the survivor of a secretive and highly illegal behind-the-scenes gladiators' tournament.

Nah, I believe its if you are consistently helpful around the site, have good reviews/greets and surpass yourself with helping the moderators take account and you have a chance at featured member.

Kamas pretty much has it! There's also being kind, caring, helpful in general, and respecting other members.

But, really, there's only one featured member chosen every month, and there are a lot of good members on YWS. Don't worry about it too much. :)
