Request: Read it as if someone telling a campfire story.
Ages ago, around the coast of Europe, there used to be a town called Sooware. It was named for the exact reason it was made; most of the sewers around the continent led through the town and went out to the ocean. It didn’t do well for the smell of that old town, but it meant jobs and cash, so there was never an empty house. Someone’s gotta do that job.
Now at some point, I can’t say I know exactly when, but a squad of mercenaries got hired to shut down the pipe there, and to kill anyone in their way. They went ahead, and burnt the town to the ground. They killed everyone, except for one little girl.
That little girl was named Jessica. She was one of the few children in the town, and she was always known to sleep more than anyone else. She yawned whenever she was awake, and was quiet while asleep.
The mercs decided to have a little fun with this girl, who slept through the sounds of bullets, fire, screaming, and an explosion or two. The mercs picked her up and dropped her into the closest manhole, and sealed it shut. As they left, they sealed up all the others, trapping her in a place that smelled so toxic, it could probably kill a bear.
After many hours, Jessica woke up. She started having trouble breathing, but that wasn’t the worst. She was completely COVERED in rats and mice. They just crawled over her, nibbled at her skin, slept on her head.
She was scared to death, but a girl that sleeps as much as she did didn’t believe it was real. She just thought it was a nightmare. So she did the only thing she could think of that would make it end.
She went right back to sleep.
She woke up about 10 or 20 more times, but went right back to sleep, scared to death in the rare occasions she awoke. It was the only way she could hide from the fear. After 2 weeks, she finally got found and rescued, but the nightmare didn’t end.
They say if you tell someone something while they’re asleep, they’ll dream about it. They’re right. Jessica still felt all the rats and mice crawling on her, in her sleep and when she woke up. She was too scared to do anything other than sleep. The only times she woke up, she yawned and went right back.
But the military had an idea on how it could work to their advantage. They hired a hypnotist to hypnotize Jessica, to teach her to be some sort of super soldier. Without the woken mind, she wouldn’t be concentrating on a sense of reality, and could fight without fear. The hypnotist did all he could, and made Jessica go from sleeping, to sleep walking, to sleep killing.
She became a silent hunter, an efficient assassin, and, because she was sleeping all the time, a restless soldier. She did every order asked and came back for the next one. She just kept on fighting non-stop, and aside from the rare moments that she yawned, she did it all quiet as a mouse.
