Rave for Heyer Books

Georgette Heyer is one of my favorite authoresses of all time.

Her books are funny, witty, romantic, and kind of Jane Austen-ish that makes them even more enjoyable. You MUST read them.

I will admit that you probably shouldn't read her books all in a row- but I won't give anything away you'll know why when you read them.

My favorites:

Why shoot a Butler? -a mystery

Black Sheep

Death in the Stocks -another mystery

The Reluctant Widow -laughed until I cried

Fredericka

Bath Tangle -'Bath' as in the town of Bath, England.

I could go on for leagues, but you'll find them all on Amazon anyway or at the library, so I won't bother.

I recommend reading one of the mysteries or The Reluctant Widow first, then go on to the others. Enjoy!

Hey! My mum loves Georgette Heyer, but I've not been able to get into them just as yet.

What attracted you to her books? I'm curious as to why you like them, considering that they're not contemporary books as far as I know. I know lots of people get into things that aren't contemporary, but romance shifts here and there in this manner. I'd love to know why you like them so much, about your favourite characters and why the ones you listed are your favourites.

I'd love to hear your opinion all in all.

What attracted you to her books?

Mom brought one home from the library and I was bored.

But I soon grew to love them for what they were. Most of them are set in regency era England,(at the time of Napoleon) -I'm a sucker for regency stuff, like most of the females in my family- and after I read my third book of hers (yes, I'll admit it took three) I was hooked.

I'm curious as to why you like them, considering that they're not contemporary books as far as I know.

contemporary books are good, in fact I think some are great, but I tend to lean more towards the non-contemporary stuff just because it's usually cleaner in some ways and more worth reading...usually.

I like them for many reasons, but these are the top ones (in no particular order)

1) There is a wide variety of characters, all of whose personality Heyer goes into hilariously funny detail with

2) While still being true to the era, she allows her characters as much leash as possible and gives them lots of bad or stressful situations to fall into to heighten the tension- while still giving them happy places to return to so that the book doesn't turn into a depressing tragedy.(I've read enough of those )

3) She does add romance into the plot, in fact, for a few, romance is the plot. It may be slightly different from the romance of today, but the river between them is the merest hop across, and in some ways the grass is greener on Heyer's side

My favorite characters? Hard to say...

In Why shoot a Butler?, (probably my favorite out of all the Heyer books) the main character (his name escapes me) Is. Awesome.

He is smart, has a casual, teasing humor, calm in times of crisis (except when that crisis involves someone close to him) and he's handsome... Great. I just described Superman. Look, I'll make it simple. He's a man. And I mean that in more ways than his gender.

Ooh, I've never heard of this author. By the sounds of it though, I'd be rather interested.

I've been reading or hearing about so many contemporary novels that a historical fiction book like you described as regency England is unique and interesting to me. Let alone, I love reading about Napoleon. I read another fantasy fiction book about his time, and it was fantastic.

Generally, they're a good break from, as we call, contemporary novels.

I think I'll have a go at Why Shoot a Butler? since you recommend it. I love Jane Austen as well, so I may find it interesting, to say the least. I'm also a sucker for happy endings.

Never (at least so far as I've read) has there been a Georgette Heyer that didn't have a happy ending, you'll love it! And the main guys are soooooo good- tell me what you think of them when you've finished, I'd love to know!
