I need some heroines!!!

I need the names of some famous heroines. I'm not interested in Mu Lan, and seeing that I've already read some books about Helen I don't think I should write about her either... I want to try and write a novel about on of history's great heroines. Preferably, not chinese or egyption.

Do you mind french? I've never read any novels about Joan of Arc, and I think it would make a pretty good one. You should be able to get books about her at the library, if you're interested.

Mary Read and Anne Bonney were female pirates, which is kind of nifty (they were two of many, but they're pretty notorious, as far as notorious goes). Elizabeth I was pretty awesome. So was her sister: Mary, Queen of Scots. There's also Lady Godiva, Pocahontas, Marie Curie, Catherine the Great, Anatasia — there are heaps more. Did you have any specific type of heroine in mind? As in: leader, inventor, adventurer?

I agree with the "Elizabeth I was pretty awesome" part. However, her sister was not Mary, Queen of Scots. (Mary, Queen of Scots was Elizabeth's cousin). Elizabeth's sister was Mary I, who burned Protistants "for the good of their souls."

Yes, I have a huge list too. Perhaps you could give us a time period, type of heroine and maybe a more specific country?

Boudica. Crazy cool Celtic Queen.

Emmeline Pankhurst. Womens' Rights Campaigner.

Queen Victoria. Longest English Monarch.

Jane Austen. Romance writer.

Oh! Yall are really amazing! This is very helpful! I'm looking into Joan of Arc and Anne Bonney and a couple more. I'm still open to suggestions though. I'm really interested in an adventuerer or a warrior... around the 18th century and prior.

Pirate Lover- look up Grace O'Malley/Granuaile, also called "The Pirate Queen." She was pretty cool and there are some rather amazing stories about her- like borrowing Elizabeth I's handkerchief and throwing it in the fire, locking up her husband's castle and shouting "I dismiss you!" by way of divorce, cutting off all her hair to get on her father's voyage... yeah, she was a dude...

Also, the Pankhurst sisters are rather awesome... uh... Joan of Arc, again, pretty awesome... Countess Constance Markievicz is a personal favourite of mine, although you may never have heard of her, she was an Irish rebel (married to a Polish count) that wanted to be executed along with the other rebel leaders, but they wouldn't execute her because she was a woman. She went on to become the first female MP in Britain -only she never took the seat. WB Yeats wrote a poem about her once...
