Whistling wind filled the empty streets, like screams of the once inhabited houses. It was an eerie silence not many could forget. But I had come here on a mission. A mission to find her. And I wasn't going to let anyone or anything stop me.
Her scarf fell from my bloodstained hand, the red of the dye mixed with my blood pooling in a crack, making for a sinister metaphor of the crap in the cracks of the world. I laughed at the bitter irony and fell on my knees. Screaming all the hurt fate had dealt me. There was no hope. I laughed some more. Trying to spite life's cruel hand, but knowing all the while it was just because I was scared.
I pushed the rancid thought from my mind and pushed on. The snow was starting to fall and I already knew the temperature was well below 5 degrees. I picked up the scarf, the only memory I had of my beloved Sophie, and ran down the road until I reached my destination.
The house was almost exactly as I remembered it, cracks lining the face of the house, ivy crawling like some sort of disease up the walls and the shutters bouncing around frantically in the wind. I opened the small gate and kept walking to the door. I smiled as I saw the insanely unkempt garden had not changed either.
I used to love that garden. We’d toil away at it, together, time seeming as meaningless as an "I love you" between lovers at war. Her lilting laughs lightening my heart as I used to entwine my fingers around her waist. That was all in flames now. Very well on its way to ashes- just the same as our garden, despite our best efforts. My very same fingers brushed the flaming fronds, scattering them to ash. They floated away on the howling wind, as did my memory of those times
My eyes hardened, trying desperately not to cry, and I put my key in the old fashioned lock. To my relief, the lock clicked and the big door swung open with an audible 'creeeeeek'. I closed the door hastily and walked into our dining room. The grand table where we used to eat our meals every night was set up like every other night. Except now it donned spider webs and mounds of dust. The memories bursting from this room was almost too much to bare. The hole in my heart was hurting and I had to sit down so I could breathe properly. I could see us at the table, laughing and smiling, joking even. I saw myself kiss her gently and her blush the most delicious colour in return. The fire warmed the room, as did our love. That did not exist anymore. Neither did she.
The wind whistled in from the tear in the roof, our home, freezing my heart over with its chill. My fingers toyed with the buttons of my jacket, an idiosyncrasy she used to love. My lips formed a stiff line as I bridled with disgust. I removed the matches from my inside pocket and my hands trembled as I struggled to light them. Fate and the heavens once again smiling their sarcastic smiles holding no genuine mirth at my misfortune... grinning a bitter "fuck you"i held the lit match to the deep violet curtains we had picked out together. I didn’t even flinch as they whooshed into flames. I sat down, unmoved, as the warmth failed to thaw my heart.
I watched as the curtains flames licked at the walls of the house. I was glad even that it would burn this place down. I didn't care. I was beyond caring for what she did to me. I wanted her gone. Death, I had decided, was the only way out. I walked over to the flames which had now lit most of the house on fire and took a deep, drawn breath. I gritted my teeth and thought of her one more time. I dived into the flames, never to resurface.
