When is "let's" acceptable to write? When is "lets" okay?
"After twelve years of therapy my psychiatrist said something that brought tears to my eyes. He said, 'No hablo ingles.'"

"Let's" is acceptable in a sentence such as: Let's go to the movies.

"Lets" is acceptable in a sentence such as: She lets me do whatever I want.

To expand on Monki's idea:

"Let's" is the shortened version of "let us." So if you can't say "let us" and have it make sense, then you should use "lets."
