The Dark...
It encloses the very life outside of this place into its depths of inky blackness. No one has been outside to venture into the terrain of the Unknown ever since the year 2150. My mum used to tell me stories of the Unknown, when it once was called, Earth. She told stories of trees, animals, sunlight, clouds, rain, snow, ice. It all seems like a dream whenever she told of the stories long ago. I'm not sure whether I believe her, sometimes I think that we've all gone insane into thinking what we want of the Unknown. It's understandable, really. Even I make up stories, but to think of such things as rain and snow. Come on, what kind of madness is such a thing?
My father, he died before I was born. He was one of the crews that was sent out on the last expedition to find something worth noting to bring back from the Unknown. They were all expected back on Januaery 23 of 2151, but never returned. They all thought them to be dead. We put their names all inside the Obituary Globe, next to my grandmother and grandfather and the other grandmothers and grandfathers who had lost grandchildren and children. I visit there sometimes to tell my dad stories of my life, I have ever since I was about 3 years old. My mum always thought me to be mad and let me be.
I'm a grown man now. I have a wife and 3 children to take care of and my mum and dad to visit at the Globe. I look around me most times and often wonder, was my mother right after all? Were there such things as trees, green plants, blue sea, blue sky, yellow and glowing sun? All I've ever known as a Child of the Greater Known is white floors, fluorescent lights, oxygen tanks, electronic keys, and being enclosed and always inside. To go outside would be total suicide. No one is to ever go outside. No one.
Then, as I start to realize something that's very reasonable to think and wonder about, I stand up and look around frantically. Where do we get the food? The Clothes? Everything? Where?! Where?!

"Where do we get our resources?!" I seize a man by the collar that has walked by me. I hear a hustle of combat boot clad feet coming toward me. I turn toward them, ready to ask my alarming question because I feel the absolute need to know. But, all I feel is a sudden shock and an intense pain and finally, a deep and dark blackness.

I wake up to a person sitting in front of me and staring at me precariously as if I might do a trick or give some kind of unexpected message. Like I'm some kind of prophet. I sit up because I notice that I've been lying down.

"What?" I say making a face at the guy staring at me. He shifts uncomfortably in his seat as I make a move for my shoes that are lying next to the bed that I was apparently dozing on.

"Where DO we get our resources?" The guy asks, shifting and looking from side to side as if someone might come and strike him down in bold lamp light. I proceed to now give him that strange look.

"What do you mean?"I say. He stares at me blankly.

"You know, you were asking the same question. Where do we get our resources?" I stare blankly again at the guy who spoke the unfamiliar question. And, a thought sparks into my brain about earlier before the waking up in a strange place occurring. Then, my mind instantly goes blank again.

"I don't know what you're talking about. Maybe you had a nightmare or something. I'm really sorry, but I must go now. I have some reading to catch up on." I get up and walk out of the Sleeping Area and toward the Recreational Area. I suddenly stop and shake my head and look around at my surroundings and think back to what I said.

"Reading to catch up on? I haven't read in a long time. I don't even like to read." Then, I feel a shock in my left ear and I instantly lose that thought.

"Reading, reading is my favorite hobby. Reading, is good for you. Reading will make you smarter and wiser." I walk toward the bookshelves and pick up a book. "The Book of Rules for the Greater Known by Dr. Sandra Maglona. What a lovely read I think this will be." I automatically sit down and start reading. Before I know it, I've read to chapter 50. I instantly put the book back and yawn and stretch.
"I think it's time for me to go to the Sleeping Area and have a few dreams." I start to walk toward the Sleeping Area and am instantly stopped in my tracks. "Oh, how weird and irresponsible of me. I have forgotten my nightly dose of Herbal Cure." I walk toward the nurses' station and take my Herbal Cure and go back toward the Sleeping Area.
Once I make it inside, I feel sudden release from a tension that I didn't know was there. And I hear the click of the lock that is on the outside of my chamber door. I walk over to the bed and sit down on it and put my head in my hands.

"Oh, dear God. I've lost my ability to think for myself. At least for when I am outside of this room. I've lost the ability to talk as the way I would normally and act as I would normally act" I look up at the dark window and notice a small nick in it and a small speck of light. I stand erect and go over for a closer look. Through the little hole, and through the speck of light, I see. "A..a... leaf?"

This was really interesting! And prety well written! I'm no good for grammar, so when I say this was pretty well written, that means I could understand it. It actually reminded me a tiny bit of the Pixar movie, Wall-E. You've very nicely created a whole other world! I did have ONE thing that bothered me...

Who--wha--huh?? I didn't really understand who was talking each time. At one point I thought the other guy was talking, then I thought it was our protagonist, then I thought it was the other guy, and then I gave up trying to figure it out I was so confused.

Otherwise, I would LOVE to see where you go with this, if you go anywhere!

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I corrected it, thanks again for bringing that to my attention.

:) I really enjoyed reading that. The beginnning is extremely engaging, to be honest I was lost in it until the end and now I seriously want more. I really want to see where you're going to go with this.

Where do we get the food? The Clothes? Everything? Where?! Where?!

"Where do we get our resources?!" I seize a man by the collar that has walked by me. I hear a hustle of combat boot clad feet coming toward me.

I just love that. I don't know why, but you really, really feel the desperation, and, plus, it makes me want to know. Also, the cliffhanger at the end. I am so reading the next chapter ;)
