Ghost Child - Chapter Seven

The guard opened the door for a “times up” and saw Lex about to suck my blood and grabbed me. The guard rushed me from the room and I heard Lex snarl out, “She was mine!” I just went with the flow after that from still being in shock.

Xander brought me to a courtroom and I got lots of “boos” and “kill hers”. It was not a pretty sight. A group of people sat behind a desk and Xander told me that the boy’s trials were taking place now too so I couldn’t watch them.

The defendant, a neko with bright red curls, orange ears and an orange tail strolled up to me.

“I am the defendant, Laurence the Neko.”

“I-I am the accused, Rina the Ghost Child.”

And old woman hammered her gavel against her desk and said, “Begin.”

“Rina, you are being convicted for murder and being a dangerous creature. My job here is to let the audience know about things you have done in the past that would fall under the categories I just said you are in court for. Tell me, do you remember the Fire of 1922?” Laurence pressed.

I stared blankly at him and said the stupidest thing a person could in court, “What?”

“The Fire of 1922 consisted of over 300 deaths of a fire in a town. The fire was uncontrollable and gruesome and YOU started the fire.”

Shrills and terrified screams came from the audience. One person actually shouted out, “Send her to Death!”

“How can I be convicted of murders that I don’t even remember and happened almost 90 years ago?” I asked.

“Don’t lie to me Rina! Can you not remember you were evil? If you are the same Ghost Child spirit as you were then then I assume that you are still evil and dangerous,” Laurence have a humph.

“You said you assumed. I promise that I am not evil.” I stamped my foot.

“I see through your lies.”

“What lies are there to see through?” Then it hit me. My surroundings changed and I was watching burning buildings and screaming mothers. I saw me, jumping from a three-story window into the flames that were burning below. Then I blinked and I was back in the courtroom. Did I just witness my own death? Was that the Fire of 1922?

A man walked up from the audience clearing his throat and said to the judge, “My name is Truman. I excuse the defendant from speaking and would like to take over,” The judge nodded approval. Laurence looked like he would protest but thought better of it and sat down. Truman told me to stand very still as he pushed his fingers against my temples and we both closed our eyes at the same time.

Memories from the past month scrolled through my mind. They stopped and then Truman released me and we both opened our eyes.

“She holds no dangerous thoughts or memories,” Truman announced, “I see no reason to sentence her to Death.” he winked at me, "I want you to live." he whispered so no one but me could hear.

“What are you?” I whispered to Truman.

“Mind Reader,” he glanced sideways at me.

The judge thought for a couple of seconds and then nodded, “ I hereby state that Rina Carey will be freed.”

Relief spread through my body but I stiffened when Xander ran to me, “Rina it’s so amazing that you aren’t going to die but I need to show you something,” He grabbed my hand and we jogged to the courtroom next door. I tried to yank my hand free of Xander’s grasp but froze as I saw brad’s body on the ground and someone sticking a needle into Heath’s neck.

Heath’s body went limp and he fell to the floor. Lex’s head turned to me at the last second, his eyes filled up with hate at seeing me holding hands with Xander. The needle went into Lex’s neck and I saw him trying to fight whatever was injected into his body. His legs gave way and his body fell to the ground.

Dead.
Have faith! With a dashing hero like me on the case, how can we fail?

A person is a fool to become a writer. His only compensation is absolute freedom. He has no master except his own soul, and that, I am sure, is why he does it.
