Later that night I awoke in panic from a nightmare. As I tried to remember the dream, it became more distant than before so I gave up. Downstairs, I once again heard voices, this time though I was determined to join them.
Crawling out if bed, I was wide awake even though it was two in the morning. As I moved down the hallway my foot nudged a body, suppressing a scream I looked down to see Derrick rolled up into a little ball, sleeping.
I let out a sigh of relief, and continued my journey downstairs. Standing at the corner I overheard the conversation.
“We need to leave, for the safety of Alyss, they have already found us once,” said Aralee.
“She has bodyguards, and I would extend this offer to you, but you refuse to take it. Alyss is perfectly fine,” replied Alessandro
“Tell me Alessandro, where were they this afternoon when she needed them?”
He mumbled something under his breath that I couldn’t hear, but apparently my mother could.
She raised her voice, “I know she is immortal, but Alyss can still pain can’t she? There are worse things than dying.”
“You’re right, I’m sorry. I will take her with me when we set off in the morning. Alyss will have time to say her goodbyes and we’ll go.”
Deciding to reveal myself, I stepped around the corner. It took them several seconds to notice that I was there.
They looked down and shuffled their feet, knowing that they had been caught, again.
“Alyss, you need to pack your bags, you’re leaving with your father in the morning.” Aralee said with remorse, “I don’t want you to leave, but it’s for your own safety.”
“I’ll…I’ll go pack my bags then,” I replied not believing that I was about to leave Aralee and my lifelong home.
“Take only what you need,” added Alessandro, “You need to be able to carry it.”
Turning, I ran up the stairs as if to outrun my troubles. Derrick looked up startled as I ran down the hall and into my room. Grabbing my bags, I threw anything that I needed in it. I was done packing in a matter of minutes.
I came to a decision, I was neither going to stay here, or go with my father.
Slinging my bag over my shoulder, I took a last glance around at my room. I wouldn’t be returning. Before I could lose my nerve, I walked over to the window.
Finally I managed to open it without making any noise. Dropping my pack out the window I watched it fall in slow motion. It was a long way down and I had to be careful.
Crawling out the window, I grasped the edge and lowered the rest of my body out the window. My fingers started throbbing and I squeezed my eyes shut.
I forced my fingers to let go and I landed on the ground in a crouch. Letting out a sigh of relief, I stood up and picked up my bag.
My decision wasn’t final; I didn’t know where I wanted to go. Anywhere away from the chaos that I had unintentionally created. Looking at the road I started running. Aralee and Alessandro could go back to their twisted lives. They had lied to me.
Before I could take a step, I was stopped by a hand landing on my shoulder. Tensing, I swung around, ready to defend myself. To my relief it was Derrick.
“So are you here to stop me, or go with me?” I asked.
He rolled his eyes, “I’m here to go with you. You’re always getting in trouble. I appoint myself your personal and reliable bodyguard.”
Smiling at him, I felt relieved that I wouldn’t make the journey alone. He grabbed my hand and we set off, running faster than possible for a regular human.
The stars helped with my sense of direction. I was surprised that Derrick hadn’t asked where we were going yet. He just seemed to know. I felt comforted by this fact; it felt like two puzzle pieces coming together. We fit perfectly together.
We ran without interruption until the dawn. Derrick pulled me to a stop and spoke.
“We have to stop now. You can’t become discovered and nether can I. When I let you go and started helping you, I became a traitor to my race.”
I looked at him startled; I hadn’t realized how much he had given up for me. He had probably lost his family, friends, and his whole previous life. I turned down my head ashamed. Yet again I had interfered in someone’s life, in a negative way.
He seemed to notice. “It’s not your fault you know. I had been planning to break off that life style. I’m very peaceful and I hate to see people hurt. You did me a favor.”
“You’re just trying to make me feel less guilty,” I said accusingly.
He laughed, “Why would I do that?”
My face lifted up to his, an idiotic grin on my face. He pulled me closer and his warm lips met my own. I felt like I had wings, and my heart would beat out of my chest.
I stepped away and looked at his eyes again. They had returned to their normal luminescent green that I loved.
“Your eyes need to stay that color. They’re the most interesting.” I said.
“They are my natural color. What you see at school is my normal form,” he smiled at me and my butterflies fluttered in my stomach.
“Come on, let’s walk for now. It wouldn’t be as strange.”
I looked around to see that we were on the countryside. The trees made a canopy above us just like they did near my home. Kicking up the dirt, we continued our walk until dusk set over.
