*sorry for my lateness. Will be gone next week. Sorry if this is a bit long.*

Elizabeth Cummings Day 1

I slowly opened my eyes; I was curled up in a ball, the concrete hard beneath me. It didn’t take long for me to realize I wasn’t in my normal attic room. Not to far away from me was a ladder on a concrete wall. I sat up, and a tendril of my blonde hair floated in front of my face. It was only then that I looked up and saw water ripple above my head when a leaf fell in. “I’m underwater?” I thought, realizing that I must be the bottom of the pool. I jumped off the floor, only to sink back down sense I couldn’t swim. I started walking up the slope, towards the ladder. “Why don’t I feel like I need air?” I thought after I noticed that I must have been under water for a while. I shrugged a little, better to have no air than to be dead. Soon I reached the ladder, stepping up one step at a time, preparing myself for the scolding that would be soon to come once my foster mother, Samantha, realized I had been in the pool I took a deep breathe of air once my head broke the surface. I looked around, expecting to Samantha, or even Herald, my foster father, lounging by the pool, but instead I saw a man I didn’t know. “Must be on of Samantha’s friends,” I thought, even though I didn’t recognize his face from a magazine. I started walking away, afraid that he would tell Samantha I had been in the pool, a luxury I wasn’t aloud to enjoy, but he said something before I disappeared around the corner.

“Hold on, Elizabeth,” he said, a clear British accent ringing through his words. I sighed before I started walking back towards the man, wonder how he knew my name.

“I wasn’t swimming in the pool,” I said, not sure if it was the truth or a lie,” I was cleaning the poolside tables when I slipped and fell in. Please don’t tell Samantha.” I cringed as I called her by her real name, something that would get me sent to my room for the rest of the day if she found out.

“I won’t tell. Even if I did, she wouldn’t care,” he said, “Because you’re dead.”

“D-dead?” I stuttered, “If I’m dead, are you dead, too?”

“I’m not dead,” he said, a small smile spread across his face, as if he were amused by the idea, “I’m Death.” Death straightened up, getting down to business. “You have thirty days on Earth, but before you get too excited, you’re going to be on Earth as a spirit. If you did have a body, you might open your eyes to the walls of a casket, or six hundred feet under water.” Elizabeth nodded.

“Can I ask you a question, though?” Elizabeth said. Death sighed before replying,

“Only one.”

“How long have I been,” she tried to cough up the word that seemed to be stuck in her throat, “Dead.”

“For a while, longer than the rest.” He stood up and looked at Elizabeth. “Make the most out of your thirty days.” He started to walk away when Elizabeth realized she didn’t know something important.

“How did I die?” she called after him. Death turned around.

“I’m sorry, Elizabeth, but we had a deal. One question.” He walked around the corner, leaving Elizabeth alone, unaware of how she died.

Rain fell on the iron gate before me. It was tall, so tall I could barely see the top. I tried to open the gate, but my hand just floated through. I tried again, but the same thing happened. I tried again and again, each time becoming more and more frustrated as my hand went through the gate. Tired of being disappointed, I gently floated through the sturdy iron bars. I passed more head stones than I could count, but soon I found mine. There was a small, stone angel on my gravestone, something Alex probably requested. I read the words engraved in the headstone.

Elizabeth was the wonderful sister of Alex Cummings, her death was a tragedy.

I cried out in frustration as I read the words, it didn’t sa how I died, or when. I sat by my grave, I almost didn’t notice a car pull up and a figure carrying flowers walk towards my grave. When he was closer to me, I knew who he was. Alex. I jumped up and ran to hug him, “Alex!” I passed right through him, something I should have known would happen.
“Who’s there?” he called, his eyes searching the cemetery.

“It’s me, Elizabeth,” I said, but he didn’t see me. Alex set the flowers on the grave, tears forming in his eyes.

“I feel like this is all my fault, if I hadn’t been so selfish. I wish I hadn’t been so selfish.” Alex started walking back to the car, I followed him. He didn’t even notice. I made myself promise I would try and talk to him tomorrow, I didn’t think I could take it if I talked to him but he didn’t talk back.
