The lights of the movie theater were stunning! People came from all around, like moths to a flame, every night when the whole building burst to life with color. White flashing lights bordered the names of the featured films. Red lights spelled out MAJESTIC on the front of the marquee. Inside, the lobby was always brightly lit, with intricate chandeliers containing hundreds of flickering candles. Around the lobby proudly stood a set of magnificent gilded doors, each of which led to the screening room. Inside the theater, row upon row of red velvet seats stood nobly around the ornately decorated proscenium. The decoration was an ancient frieze, in actuality a fairly detailed scene involving the love making of a forest of nymphs, but indecipherable from a distance. It all reinforced the undeniable grandeur of the theater. Without a doubt, the theater was irresistible. Not just irresistible to the masses, but also to the rich and well off. To the citizens of the fine city in which it resided, the picture theater was a stunning beacon of technology, entertainment and a modern age.
The day began at sunset, when the ticket manager would arrive at work. After placing his soft black bag on the floor of his station, he would disappear into a small back room, which contained all the mechanical equipment. There, the man connected two black wires with almost mystical reverence, and indeed, they did do magic. It was this man and his modest black cables that set the fantastic façade ablaze each night. He would then return to his seat and wait to make a sale. The wait was never long, as men and women and children ran blindly towards the light, and pushed and shoved to reserve their place for the show.
“Oh, Astor, I fear we might miss it!”
“Just keep running m’dear, and we’ll be fine. If only you hadn’t applied so much make up.”
“But, you know I must look nice for the theater darling, you wouldn’t have me look like a tramp!”
But the people always made it in the end.
One particular night, everything changed. The early crowds were there, jostling each other when a deathly lull fell over the crowd. A scream rent the night, and the crowd panicked, mothers ran with their children, and fathers ran right after their families. The ticket manager ran outside and, together with the owner tried to quiet the crowd. But the people were not to be placated, and in seconds, the street outside was deserted, save for one…
The pirate looked around for the source of the disturbance, but couldn’t see anything that might have caused the people to scatter so. He wondered if the show was still on. He had been looking forward to it for some time, in truth, simply because it had been rated ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
