The Rum Diary

Has anybody else read this? Fantastic read, for older writers on here, anyways. The story's about A journalist that moves out to San Juan, trying to scratch a living among the locals and the tourists. Quite an interesting read. I don't condone the excessive amounts of drinking that fill the pages, but if you ignore the amount of alcohol the protagonist takes in, you'll find a story that will leave you chuckling, and wanting to read it again. It's filled with dark humor that will crack you up, and then leave you wondering why you burst out laughing in the first place.

This sounds good, what is the story like? Is there like a main plot?

Let me see...this takes place in the 1950's. This guy is a journalist, as I mentioned. He dropped out of Vanderbilt, went to New York and he'd been working as a journalist there, until he got hired out in San Juan, Puerto Rico. So he takes the job, and he flies over. From there, he meets a few decent guys like him, and they work, drink, work, work, and maybe party every now and then. What makes this a great read are the situations that happen when the protagonist has had too much to drink. As one of his friends says in the book, "We keep drinking and these terrible things happen." it's a subtle message as to what alcohol can do to a normal human being if they aren't too careful..

At any rate I don't want to ruin anything, so I just suggest you check it out if you have no aversion to alcohol, a few sexual references, and unfortunately, sailor mouths that the protagonist's friends seem to have.

I might've already said it; it's a mature read. A great one, though.
