I could feel my legs failing, as I sprinted through the crowded wood. Darkness was still near, I could feel it. If I didn’t get to my Nan’s house soon, the consequence would be costly. I could hear birds, fleeing from the trees. The presence of evil was close now. Maybe I was over reacting, but I doubted it as I’ve heard so many ghost and horror tales about boys like me in a similar position. I took a quick glance behind me, sensing that something was watching me. But as turned I made the biggest mistake of all, and now I wished I hadn’t even thought about turning around. Something invisible and cold grabbed my foot and yanked me to the muddy ground. I helplessly tumbled to the ground, feeling my ankle twist and break. I was too shocked and scared to scream out in pain, instead I just froze, waiting for the dark to take me. End me. But that didn’t happen. It seemed that the evil still hadn’t had its share of fun and wanted me to suffer. I tried to lift my self up but and strong weight forced me down, pressing hard on me. All of the air rushed out of my lungs, I tried to breath but no, the air was gone. There was nothing to breathe in. I tried to fight for air, fight for my life but this was it. Then suddenly I felt the pressure on my chest decrease and then I could hear something, something even more chilling. My ears ringed as the thump of loud heavy footsteps vibrated the muddy surface. It was getting louder; it was advancing, coming for me. I wanted to look but I was afraid of what I might find whether it was good or evil. I lied there my body soaking into the wet mud, I was powerless the forces of evil were too great. The heavy footsteps grow louder and louder until…
“Lewis what are you doing done there, your mother’s genna kill me, look at the state of your clothes. What happened?”
I shivered as my Nan spoke to me, in her Witch like voice. Well, it was more of a cackle than a proper woman’s voice. I lifted my self up and turned around to face her. It wasn’t that I was scared it was just that she was mysterious and always so secretive. I was always cautious with people, but I was extra cautious with her. We just simply stared at each other for what seemed like a millennium, when finally I plucked up the nerve to break the ice.
“Well I was just on… I was just on my way to your house but I ran and slipped on some mud. I think I have broken my ankle. I can’t walk it’s to painful.”
I said, trying to keep the fear out of my voice. She stared at me, full of disbelief but then she suddenly, I was shocked by what she said.
“ well little man there’s no need to be scared now is there, so lets have a look at that ankle of yours aye”
As she said it, she knelt down before me. She placed her hand on my ankle and gripped it tight. The pain was terrible but I showed no sign of weakness. She then pulled out a strange herb from her pocket and with her other hand started to rub it against my ankle, as she dead a gasped as a new pain swam through my ankle. But then suddenly all was still, everything seemed to have stopped, all sound, all sight had vanished. There was nothing. After seconds had passed everything rearmed to normal and I found my Nan standing a few paces away shaking her head. I leapt to my feet, and that’s only when I realised it. The pain had gone. My ankle had healed within seconds. Who was this, was it really who she said she was, was she my Nan? Or was she something else, something from within the mysteries of darkness itself? I don’t know what or who she is. But from his day onward it’ll be my mission, my goal to find out.
