Hey all!!
I'm icequeen.
well, obviously, you'd know that if you read my username.
ANYWAYS.
My friend told me about this website, and I thought "Heck, I'll give it a try."
I love writing. Really I do. And I know that this is probably the one website where the majority of people know the difference between "there", "their", and "they're".
I'm sorry, I just have a kind of spelling/grammar obsession.
But what sucks is that I don't know how to start a story. Like, I'll start it...and it'll be the crappiest, corniest beginning you've ever read. So usually, I just skip the beginning :).
Another problem I have is when I'm trying to change from scene to scene. I just...I don't know, when I write scene changes, it doesn't seem...flowy. It seems as if i hacked a...let's say carrot, into pieces, then glued them haphazardly to each other, all in the wrong place.
I don't know if you get what I'm trying to say. Most people don't, but then, I don't blame them.
Anywho, if anyone can help me with this, I will be eternally grateful to you.
Thanks a lot!

Welcome dear, I'm Max. If your having trouble why don't you just start a storybook. Where you create rules and a setting and others will help you they create their own characters and you can start something. Sorry unfortunally that's all I can come up with so far. :(

Hey Max,
Thanks! But...as I said, I'm new here. So: sorry, but what exactly IS a storybook?
Thanks!

Hi Icequeen!

These are Storybooks.

What you can also do is just READ. Read the writings of other users on the YWS, or authors in the real world. Try to notice how THEY manage transitions (nice carrot metaphor, by the way! Really got your point across!) and beginnings. Go to the library (or your own bookshelf) and read the first few pages of lots of different books, find some that you like in particularly and try to figure out WHY you like them... is it that they start with dialogue? Character description? Setting description?

Transitions too, although I think that they would be even harder. Maybe you can post a piece of your writing that you think resembles a mangled carrot and let people here on the YWS (myself included, hopefully)tell you how to manage the transitions.

I hope this helps! Welcome to the Young Writers Society, and please PM me if you have a question about the site, want some help with something you've written or just want to talk to me!

See you around!

Hey Azila,
Thanks! Haha yeah the carrot was a spur-of-the-moment thing :)
Anyways.
That's my problem, see? I read and read and re-read all day long, yet when I try to use the styles that are used in the books (for beginnings), it just sounds...retarded. I don't know. Maybe I''ll just get someone else to write my beginnings for me :D.
Anyways, I think I'll try out a storybook!
Thanks for all your help!!!!!
Oh, and would anyone mind reading my story? I posted it up in Other Fiction, it's called Teri's Necklace. Sorry, but I'm still kind of paranoid about that: some people say it's great, and some say "What the hell is this??"
Anywho.
Thanks!!!
Eternally grateful,
Icequeen

Welcome Icequeen, I'm Lupe. Helpful is probably the best word to describe us, sometimes it's a bit creepy when you realize that the world sucks and throws rocks at you and that we rule and give you a band aid, and ice pack, some gauze wrap, antibiotics, and a lollipop.

Obviously you're in the right place. I always hoped to find that one group of people who knew the difference between there, their, and they're. And they found me. Now we're here to help you. I'll take a look at your story and see if I can help.

Welcome to the family,
Lupe

Oh, that's encouraging. "You can't write? Go start a role-playing game and forget about it!"

Ok. Having finished my rant, I'd just like to say "welcome." If you need help, PM me. Or you could also go to the "hints and tips" forum.

Thanks, guys! I'll definitely try out the things you recommended.

I just have to say this: About an hour after I joined YWS, a friend sent me an email saying "Be their or be square!"

I sent an email back, saying "Be their's or be squares!"

She didn't get it.

Anyways, thanks for all your support!! I have to go now, as my cat is trying to eat my arm out of hunger...

Painfully yours,
Icequeen
