Chapter 1
It is a time when old meets new. When horse meets car, and sword meets gun. History was becoming a forgotten knowledge. Things in the world that are not in history books, nor taught in school, but have been passed down through the generations of families are fast becoming discovered. It is a time when mystical things were locked away, awaiting the light of their escape.
“I know you can do better than this! Strike me!” A man exclaims forcefully as his hands move smoothly, effortlessly over a young woman’s strikes, manipulating them to his will.
The deeply tanned young woman is clearly the least experienced of the two. Her long, chestnut hair sweeps around her waist as she moves out of her sparring partner's way. He is just taller than her, and appears to be only a few years older. He grins, adjusting the blade at his side out of his way. The setting sun catches his hair, shining gold on the brown. Sweat beads on the man’s cinnamon colored skin as he pushes forward. She stumbles, her hakama catching on her katana, but she recovers herself and throws a few punch-kick combos, he blocks them with incredible ease.
“I…I’m trying Sempai,” she pants, exhausted from the long fight. She takes short bursts of breath, causing her to be on the verge of hyperventilating.
“No! You either do or you do not, there is not try!” She throws a punch at his face. Boredom strikes across his sharp features, he tilts his head as he grabs her arm. Using her lunging motion against her, strikes her in the abdomen with his elbow. The impact causes her to lose all breath as a silenced scream of pain shoots from her mouth. Spittle and blood fall from her gaping mouth, as she is thrown back, landing on her face.
“You’re distracted. Met, clear your mind, only then can you obtain the peace of mind to see my motives, my actions. Now, stand and take your stance!” Blood drips from her mouth as she staggers to her feet.
“Hai, Sempai.” She grunts as she attempts to support herself, the sun catches her body and illuminates the cuts and bruises on her body. Seeing the condition of his student’s body, he changes his mind.
“No, that’s enough for today. Let’s go in.” He lets down his guard, dropping his hands down to his sides. He walks towards her with a grin on his face. “We have been sparring for long enough now. Even the sun says that it is tired.”
A little taken aback, she raises to stand in front of her teacher and friend. “Domo arigato gozaimashita o shiate kudosai.” She bows.
The man bows back approvingly, “and thank you for teaching me a thing or two.”
They both share a quick laugh as they walk toward the house just off on the edge of the clearing.
“Kyori. I have been thinking a lot about the past lately. There are a few things I just can not get out of my head.”
Kyori halts as she speaks, a look of concern on his sweat drenched face. “Is it about when you came to study with me?”
“Well, not that night. More about between then and—the fight you and Ryo had.”
“How about we talk more about this in the morning? You need to rest, and I am quite tired myself.”
They walk up to the house together in shared silence. Both remembering those difficult years of both pain, sadness, and joy.
