1. I have never read the book, which is weird because you'd think I would have. Someday, probably.
2. Okay, so, not having read the book, I did go see the movie last night. There was a romance that I assume was not in the book (based on Lowry's other book that I have read, in which the MC was like ten), but other than that I thought it was fantastic.
3. There is not violence and insurrection. I mean, there's the whole "release to elsewhere" thing, but the only "violence" is the violence in the memories of war that Jonas receives from the Giver. There is not any mass insurrection or anything like that, so whoever had the impression of that from the previews, I can tell you that's not what happens in the movie.
4. I saw people online flipping out because "why is the movie going to be in color," but actually it starts off in black and white as it should. (I now understand why that was a concern, but I thought it was handled well.)
5. The only thing aside from the romance (which by the way is not toooooo overdone, like they aren't just like, "Omg, now I can feel things and I love you!!!" Thank goodness) that bothered me at all was the opening a little bit, because of the way the world is...I mean, like the three friends at very first seemed very generic, but considering all differences have been removed (as far as they can be), I guess that could just be a product of the world. Once it got to the ceremony where the kids got assigned their jobs and Jonas started receiving memories, it was fantastic.
I mean, I'm unbiased as far as book-movie differences go because as yet I haven't read it, so...if you've read the book, it's entirely possible it'll annoy you. I know I'm like that about books I love (not that it stops me from seeing the adaptations). But I enjoyed it, and that's not at all being a fan of dystopia. (HG did nothing for me and I'm not even planning on seeing or reading Divergent.)
