Analysis

A few interesting things to note. First, YWS is becoming increasingly popular in the Mid-East and India. In the top 10 cities, two are from the Arabian Peninsula. Other popular cities from that area of the world are Cairo and Muscat. In India, none of the top cities crack the top 50 as YWSers tend to be spread out there -- much like it is with the USA, which despite comprising 58.5% of all visits only makes up 33% of all cities in the top 50.

Second, Internet Explorer hardly registers anymore, and Firefox is increasingly falling out of favor as well.

Third, July ended up being the most active month so far in 2013, despite usually being a month where YWS sees a drop in activity. What helped with beating the normal July slump was the Christmas in July event. Before that event, activity in July was proceeding as it normally does: fine until July 4, and then a big drop in activity thereafter. After that event, though, YWS was consistently hitting high activity marks every day.

The top ten cities are always so interesting- it's funny that the profile changed so much this month!

I believe 3 people is a major understatement, Nate! Hmmm, this is interesting. I wonder how many of the people used Comodo IceDragon... I see Chicago is on that list. Pfft, it's only like a two hour drive from here! xD Wow, Christmas in July was apparently a big success!

I'm mostly surprised by how much Chrome is winning the browser war, considering recent news that Firefox is slightly better.

On average visit duration, you can see the spread for July here:



A plurality of visits lasted for less than 10 seconds -- mostly the result of random Google searches as they usually land on topic pages. All those visits weigh the average down by quite a bit, and most YWS activity comes from those who are on the site for more than 30 minutes. If I were able to remove all visits lasting less than 10 seconds, I'm sure the average visit duration would bounce to well above 30 minutes.


A couple of other possibly mildly interesting stats:

- The homepage has a very low bounce rate of just 20% versus 29% for the site as a whole. People also spend an average of 2 minutes on the homepage.

- The chatroom has the highest bounce rate of the top 20 pages at 46%. But, it also has the highest visit duration of any page in the top 20 at 6.5 minutes.

- The most popular literary tab is All Literary followed closely by the Green Room.

- The least popular literary tab by a country mile is "Shorts"

- Collectively, the literary sections make up the sixth most popular area of the site. The top 5 are the homepage, notifications, private messages, the forums, and then the people tab.

- It takes 17 seconds on average for a person to login.

- It takes a minute and 12 seconds on average for a person to register.

- Once second in popularity only to the homepage, view new posts now comes in at number 31, behind such popular areas as "Change your avatar" and "Register." Still more popular than Shorts, which comes in at number 35.

- 1,107 people visited YWS by doing a Google search for http://www.youngwriterssociety.com.

- "guy, piercing, long black hair, green eyes, tattoo" is one of the top 50 search terms for YWS.

- 4 people got to YWS by searching for fanfiction about Andy Samberg.

- 231 people got to YWS by first visiting the chatroom at chatroll (the one we haven't used since January).

I am guilty of googling the "guy tattoo green eyes" Thing just to test if it worked.
No avail actually.

@Jack Totally agree with you, Mozilla for life. Now that I have my new laptop I once again have a bug free Mozilla and am so happy! I also set up every new person who starts at my work with a Mozilla browser as their default. Viva le revolution!

I... I don't even know what to think about this but it definitely made me laugh for the past five minutes.

I frinkin' hate Bing and Internet Explorer. WTH is with all the stupid ads? No I don't want to freaking Bing It On. I did that already. I really want Chrome or FireFox. Those are the best, and safer. Internet Explorer is just a virus waiting to be clicked on.

I know, but I don't have any fire walls setup yet. That kinda needs to be dealt with. I will, eventually.

I was comparing these statistics to the last ones...
I bet you anything I was the one who put my city (previously not on the list) so high on the top cities list.
Because I totally don't login like 7 times a day. >.<
