How have you tortured your characters?

16 posts in this topic.

  1. In what ways has your evil manifested itself upon your characters?

I've crushed a character with a flaming tree... Killed off their friends... I'm a huge fan of the tragic history... One of my characters is often despised and considered a monster. :)

    What about you guys?
  2. Let's see here...

Current MC lost seven of her best friends/training partners because she was friends with them and they were a distraction, she's got a few dozen scars on her from training to be an anti-assassin tool, which for women is "forbidden". Then there's the burn she gets on nearly her whole arm, which brands her as a witch, and how she gets poisoned and nearly killed (completely avoidable), then most of the people surrounding her turn out to be evil. She's disowned for stepping out of line and later banished in everything but name once she's finally brought "peace" to everything, just because she's brought so much change.
  3. Haha, yeaaah.

My main character is in love with a married man. It's this whole sci-fi stuff, but in the very end of the story, after the married man told my main character that he would never love her because he loves his wife, my MC finds his wife dying. She has an opportunity to save her, but she doesn't. Instead she tells the married man that she is dead. My MC naturally thinks that everything will work out between them then. But, happily, no. The married man is killed by a falling roof, and my MC is left along -I mean completely alone - in the world. She isn't man enough to kill herself, so she dies of old age, alone and miserable.
  4. Oh, my! Well, now I think I need more details...

Main character number one was a hero in another world for a little while, but he couldn't enjoy it because he was so homesick for Earth. So then he got back to Earth and his suddenly-overprotective parents and everyone he ever knew thinking he's crazy. He becomes unpopular, vaguely emo... Harbors secret hopes that one of his old other-worldly friends will show up and call him back to the other world. But who is it that really shows up? The chick who used to be his worst enemy (she has her own issues with being known as the loyal monster of the evil king MC helped sack earlier, even though she had no choice but to help him. Both she and the MC deal with being alone in the world and uncertainty about what world to stay in). She drags him back and he finds out that in killing the evil king, he actually made everything worse, so it's pretty much all his fault. His old girlfriend is dead, his friends don't believe it's really him at first, he feels crappy because he's pretty useless even though he's a legend in that world, but no one really believes in him... And then there's the whole "Crush one of his friends with a flaming tree" and "make him realize he was wrong to hate his old worst enemy" guilt trip thing...

And yeah. David hates his life.
  5. Minor characters get eaten, ripped apart, beheaded, burned, just about everything possible. Major characters get knocked out regularly, get injuries, and never get to be with person they love for an assortment of reasons.
  6. My characters get whatever is most important to them taken away. Usually I add a sprinkle of psyical deformities or injuries as well.

Then they think they're going to get it back. Then they die. Or watch someone else die. While they listen to me laugh.

And that's just the short stories.
  7. My MC was nearly killed by a crazy guy, married off by her really well-meaning father to a man who was really a pawn for two women that were actually kidnapping her to more or less use her abilities for personal gain. She has been beaten up regularly, yelled at, drugged, and almost killed by the antagonist. Her relationships with her best friend and her brother have been damaged nearly beyond repair, and the person she grows closest to after that is brutally murdered. Several of her other close companions are killed as well. When it's all over, she'll either be permanently insane or will have to leave everything she knows behind to be able to cope again. Or maybe she'll die.

Also, all my minor characters are typically kicked around and killed off for my own enjoyment.
  8. Hmmm.... at the start of a recent novel, my character starts off as abandoned by her mother, never knowing her father, antisocial and always getting in fights. One of her foster parents physically abused her (and maybe sexually as well?). The first plot point is her getting kidnapped by a bunch of earthfighters (similar to earthbenders if you watch Avatar) and being put in revealing clothing, paraded down a runway, and sold to the highest bidder. The person who buys her forces her to train as a earthfighter (which it turns out she is) and makes her fight in matches, and eventually in to-the-death matches. In the end, she realizes that because of all she's gone through, she cannot love enough do the right thing and sacrifice herself, so she ends up jumping off a tall building into hard rock, making everyone think she killed herself (earthfighters, when they die, float into the rock, to the earth's core, but she just earthfought her way through the rock and away from everyone else, making it look like she died) and losing the person she almost-loved.

Yeah, coming up with twisted ways to emotionally hurt my character is one of my favorite past times. *evil grin*
  9. My MC is betrayed, sent to his death, and after finally battling his way out of self-hatred and misery, he sees the light of redemption! Then he dies. Via stab through heart. Mwah ha ha.

(Watch as author fights with MC in head:

"You didn't have to kill me you know! I could have still won!"

"But you see, I was just completely sick of you, so you HAD to die!")

And yes, I hope the readers will scream no and then walk of to sob for about an hour. And yes, Iwill be laughing my head off.
  10. My character's brain is going to explode.
  11. My main charecters best friend just got killed in a riot
  12. My main character is a serial killer.
He burns off the fingertips of his victims, and tortures them before he kills them.
  13. Hm... mine gets knocked out constantly and is mentally ill ^-^
  14. Let's see...I've killed his dad, I've killed his brother, I've killed his village, I've killed his girlfriend, I've knocked him out, I've poisoned him....
  15. Written by users I never expected to inflict pain on their characters' loved ones...The second two comments are written by users with UNICORN avvies, for God's sake!

Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.
