What's Happened to Disney Movies? by John Evans.

This was an article I was assigned to read for English. This is only one of two (the second one being just about The Lion King) that I had to read. (That article being All Is Not Well With The Lion King by Margaret Lazarus.)

Anyway, in John Evans' article, if you can't see the url, he thinks Disney is going downhill, but not as much as most of us appear to think. He criticizes some of Disney's movies (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas) for having extreme violence, sexual innuendos, and creating ideas that could affect a child's perspective on life (religious beliefs for example).

Some questions to start discussion can be found in the spoiler. But what do you think?

What are your thoughts on Disney as a whole? Do you really think Disney is going down to the dogs (or even lower)? In general, is Hollywood losing its touch with children movies?

Are there any Disney movies you feel are extreme for young children to watch? For example, as a child, I was deathly afraid of Ursula, so should I have not ever seen the movie, even though I watched it all the time and loved it?

There have been rumors for years now that Disney purposefully put sexual innuendos in the films. (Such as the word "sex" formed by stars in The Lion King or "Take off your..." quote in Aladdin.) Do you think they were on purpose?

Go ahead and mention the new Disney/Pixar film too. Wall-E? The Incredibles? Do any of them seem a bit too much for young children?

Well as for going to the dogs, I believe that kids are understanding and are being expsoed to things are far too advanced for them. I know kids in kindergarten who knew some very innapropriate words and other things as well. Disney is just going along with that. But they are hiding it in other things.

There are some movies that are a bit too much, but that is on the parents to decide. It is the responsibility of the parent to keep things away from thier child that they don't want them to know about.

I do believe that the sexual innuendos were put there on prupose. The creators were having a bit of fun is what has reported. Although most kids don't pick up on those. They're more interested in the movie, not looking for the word sex in the stars, or straining to hear the "take off your.." in Aliddin.

The new Disney films are a bit more friendly, I believe. But that is because they are a bit more crafty. In The Incredibles the mom suspects the dad of having an affair. Along with The Frog Prince there is more witchcraft, but it adds to the fun for the kids. Finding Nemo is very friendly towards kids. I do not remember any sexual innuendos are references between any characters. It's just a father looking for his son. So there's a notch for Disney. I haven't seen Wall-E, so I can't comment on that one.

But my over all view of this is that Disney is just trying to keep up with things. Making it more entertaining for adults too. If Disney has a problem, then so do the parents that allow thier kids to see it.
