magic

  1. I am currently writing a book and am having a problem. I want to put magic in my story, but not that Harry Potter magic. I kind of what magic that you sing. What do you think. Should I put magic in my story or leave it on the chopping table?

    Thanks a lot. :?: :?: :?:
  2. What's your book about?

And another thing: What is Harry Potter magic? Define it for us so we can give you better advice on using magic which isn't Harry Potter. :D
  3. In my opinion Harry Potter magic is Wand magic, where you can have magical talents, but the only way it can be used is through a wand, or something like that. Magic where your magic has to be channeled through objects (wands, staff, etc.) sucks, its really gay shitty magic. Because it puts limits and a lot of con's to combat the pro's.

There are tons of different types of magic, endless amounts. My favorite type of magic is generally the type where it involves mainly spoken or thought incantations, some hand movements (mainly used by socerer). Wizards usually use components, and symbols draw on things.

Yes, there is a difference between socerers and Wizards.

one interesting situation in a book i read this Magic Guild Master Wizard and His Fighter Guild Master friend were held captive and the Wizard, hands strongly bound behind his back, removed his shoes and using his toes and legs and a few words counjured up a hand which pushed the gaurd towards the Fighter who grabbed the gaurds head and repeatedly bashed it into the wall... (: ahh,... the random art of foot magic lol (this was only because his hands were tied and chained and all that jazz.)
  4. To answer your question fully, we'd need to know more about the story. Any idiot can have magic in a story. I tend to think that having magic for the sake of having it doesn't do anything in the long run.

Magic ultimately doesn't make up for a bad plot, crappy characters, or a lack of imagination. So, if you want to use magic, keep in mind that it doesn't solve any of these problems.
  5. I agree with DQ, Wand magic isnt brilliant, however it works in harry potter. I like the magic DQ described, rites, rituals but also thought provoked and incantational. I used made up a ritual magic called "Dandawnam" and it was alot to do with daggers and magic in numbers etc...
  6. Singing seems a little beaten to death, though, doesn't it?

Read something... anything by Sara Douglass, you'll catch my point.
  7. Give people random gifts. I found a whole huge pages of gifts once. giving people the power of an element is also cool.

I found a really useful link once, but I can't find it again!!! It had this massive list of all sorts of magical powers.

Or you could make up your own magic, with rituals and stuff. You could have lots of fun making up those rituals.
  8. I invented my own magic for my very first novel attempt. It was a ritual based magic called Dandawnom and basically it involved sacrifice, soul absorbtion etc... to do powerful magic. (very cliched)

But you could invent a singing type of magic - theres nothing stopping you.

You may get a better response in fools. Thread moved.
  9. Im going to have to protest the labelling of magic in Harry Potter as "Wand Magic" -- its witchcraft/spellcraft, people! Potions play a large part. Nor does it require an object through which to direct power, as seen in the childhood of Voldemort in which he used his powers without a focus.

I, am a big fan of musical magic. Massive fan actually, lol and yes I love Sara Douglas' work! Although the last novels of hers I read, magic was executed through the power of dance...
  10. But it boils down to wand magic really...
  11. No, I'm pretty sure its not actually. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizadry, not Hogwarst school of Wand magic. Ok? Good, im glad that was cleared up. There is an established category under which it fits, dont go making it into your own.
  12. ill ask a question: How does harry use magic?

Another: How do all other wizards use magic the most of the time?

I know that wandless magic is possible but on the whole they use wand magic, the magic through the use of wands. Fact.

    Thus its wand magic.
  13. It's both really. I mean, if you think about it the wands aren't just chanels for power; they have to be magical items. I've always kind of wondered whether it would be possible to use something else, and a spell, to do magic. I mean, say you have a wand that's holly and a phoenix feather. Does that mean that if at some point you were holding a piece of holly and a phoenix feather and said a simple spell, would it work? They always seem so dependent on their wands. At the same time, there Is the potions side of it, there's even mental stuff that goes on. It isn't All wand magic. Lilly's love for Harry acted as a protection for him that "wand magic" couldn't have done.

I think my favorite kind of magic is when it's a sort of force in the world that can be harnessed and used, I guess mostly with spells. Where it's not just something that comes out of thin air and does stuff for you. It actually Is something all the time. Can't think of any examples right now.
I also like telepathy a lot.
I think the idea of musical magic. I think you should give it a try.
  14. Speech or the spoken word if you will, is or can be considered a channel for power. What was there in the beginning, according to the Christian bible? The "Word".
Reciting an oath was once considered a high magic, and to break an oath would bring woe upon the oathbreaker (or so it was believed). So the idea that magic can be harnessed/used through song is an excellent idea, perhaps not entirely original, but usually its only a spoken word that is said, rather than a song sung that unleashes some sort of power.
  15. Singing magic could be interesting... Especially if one incorporates the challenges a musical singer deals with--intonation, rhythm, clarity of words, etc. More challenging than just speaking, I think.

Though I'm a little confused about what HP magic is... Do you mean having spells (or at least a magical influence) for nearly every trivial little thing?

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.
