Medication?

4 posts in this topic.

  1. I'm currently medicine-free, at least til the summer, but what about you guys? Are you taking any medicines? What are they? Have they worked? Have you tried ones that haven't worked?
  2. For a year I was on Prozac, for general anxiety disorder. I stopped using it because I got much better, felt less anxious -- most of the time -- but within a year I was an absolute mess again.

However, someone had told me that Prozac worked mostly because of the placebo effect. I felt absolutely stupid, that I "tricked" into feeling better, making what was wrong with me feel less legitimate in a way, I'm sure you all understand... So instead of going back on medication I sought therapy. I hated therapy, quit that, and now I'm back on medication again.

I don't think the placebo comment is true -- I think there are biological reasons for the medication helping. I do believe the medication is helping me anyway, as my mind seems so much more... cooler? Calmer? More calm?
  3. I have a long list of medications I can't take or medications that were ineffective. How do I know which ones hurt me? I've had six or seven reactions (some to the same medication twice or so) and that list includes... klonipin, Risperdal, Fluphenazine, Abilify, Haldol, Ativan, Seroquel, Luvox, Lexapro and Topamax. And probably some more that I haven't tried because I feel like I've had enough with weird side effects that are worse than the condition that makes me need medication to start with. I've had days when I woke up and my body just locked itself into a position that was twisted up like a pretzel. I've a rage as soon as I took Seroquel, and my doctor and parents said 'okay, no more of that stuff!' The same thing happened when I took ativan (via injection). Klonipin did nothing at all. Risperdal makes me sleepy and hungry and recently caused another dystonic reaction. So I'm gaining weight from all these medications that increase appetite. And Topamax made me almost suicidal, which I is why I can't take that either. Right now I'm on Zoloft, which seems to be helping with OCD thoughts some. And other pills that I don't know the names of. I sort of gave up on trying to keep up with what I'm taking. The medicines change every few weeks. Because so far, nothing has successfully controlled my tics... well, other than Geodon which just knocked me out. My next treatment might not be medication, I think the next thing is brain stimulation. (there's a surgery that does that, and then there's an external stimulator that they hold against your head.
A few days ago I tried to quit the Risperdal because it was causing disabling side effects, but then once it was stopped, I started going into withdrawl. So I have to take a low dose of it until I can wean off, because I can't sit around paralyzed all day.
  4. I started Celexa yesterday. So far, my body's reacting really weirdly to it but it is helping.
