How long is your average chapter?

59 posts in this topic.

  1. I have about 4,000 words. Sometimes less, sometimes more. But it's before editing, so I can't really be sure yet.
  2. Usually 5k ish. Whenever a scene is over, change chapters.
  3. I like breaking up my paragraphs so people won't give up on reading, and I also break up my story into a lot of chapters so people won't give up on reading xD

They range from 1 paragraph to 4 lines of dialogue to 9 full pages of words.
  4. My average is about...10 pages, Times New Roman, 12-pt font in MS Word. So around 5000 words.
  5. My average chapter is 6-8 pages long (by "Microsoft Word" standards).
Except for when I'm on a role, in which case my chapters can be up to 12 pages long.
  6. For me, it really depends on what I'm writing. I don't really have a specific word count or goal in mind, I just sortof write what I think would be a good length for a chapter.

For instance, I have one story where the chapters run from 200-1,200 words, but I did it on purpose to seem sort of choppy and short. On the other hand, in another novel I had one 8,000 word chapter, and so on.

So I'm not sure I HAVE a average chapter length... Though then again, I've never really though about it before....
  7. I like longer chapters. Usually around 4,000 words. But, with the novel I'm writing now, there are multiple first person narrators, so I go through a cycle of all of them, then that's a chapter. So right now, my average is 4,500-4,800. But, that's because I have to go through a cycle of all my narrators, there are four of them.
  8. My first three chapters are about 5000-6000.

But then, after that, they average out to be about 3k-4k.
  9. Anywhere from 1,000-3,500 words.
  10. My average is about 1500 to 2000 words. Action and plot-heavy chapters tend to be towards the upper end of that scale; punchy and emotional chapters get less.
  11. Uhh, I decide by pages on word. *Scratches back of head* About five pages is good, but usually all I can do is three.
  12. :thud: i write until the chapter SOUNDS done. is that weird? my chapters vary from a little over 2000 to 7000 words, lol.
  13. when i start a chapter, i say to myself: ok i need to get at least 2500 words in otherwise it's a failure and way too short. i normally average at about 4000 words though
  14. My chapters' lengths are randomly determined. It just depends on when I feel I've reached a nice, suspenseful ending, or once the main idea of the chapter is explained. Average length would be around 1500.
