Guns . . . ?

  1. While I agree guns are dangerous, I don't see how some people think they should be outlawed. Saying that guns kill people makes as much sense as saying that your pen just wrote that bad poem. It's all about the person who handles the weapon. I just cannot see how people want to outlaw guns. If you do, the people who misuse them will still have them, and crime will escalate. A law won't stop a law-breaker. It's kind of what they do. People who are responsible with guns won't have the option to protect themselves and their family. I'm from a home where you see guns all of the time. When I was small, I just saw my dad shoot them, but now I shoot sometimes, too. It's his hobby to make and collect guns, but he would only consider using them against another person if said person was trying to harm my family. So, what do you think? Do you agree with me, or do you think I'm a complete lunatic?

  2. I totally agree with you.

Except if someone broke into your house you probably shouldn't shoot them. You should let the police handle that.

I guess it would be okay to outlaw guns in England because they don't have problems with deer overpopulation and stuff. But we do in the US so it would be wrong to outlaw guns here.
  3. I don't think you should outlaw guns just make it harder to get them. That way unresponsible people wont get thier hands on them. But I do agree that you should be aloud to protect your family.

On an unrealated note, I don't care if deer are overpopulated I hate people hunting when it's not for food.
  4. But if deer aren't hunted they'll keep eating the forest until they're habitat is completely gone. It's either a couple deer each year or the whole species.

But if we let people hunt, they'll take the biggest, healthiest ones, which overall would be bad for the species... Anyway, this is getting a little off-subject.

I agree with a lot of the things you said... I don't think we could outlaw them very effectively. It would be like the Prohibition. :) If people want to have guns, I don't think it's up to anyone else to tell them whether or not they are allowed to.

    On the other hand...

So many deaths are caused every year by guns, and not just when they are fired by people who intend to do harm. I don't know how many people die from the accidental firing of guns that don't appear to be loaded, etc. Actually, I just read a story recently about a kid who got to fire a machine gun at a demonstration... But he was too small to handle the way it kicked, and so it flipped back and blew his head off. Ugh.

I think maybe a better solution would be to allow guns, but require people to handle them responsibly, maybe require and extensive permit? Maybe that would help.

  6. I totally agreee with you, there. Some people are so irresponsible with firearms it's pitiful. They think they know how to use them, but in all realty they have no clue. They've seen it on TV and think that since it looks easy it is. It's definitely not. I agree that people should have to prove they know how to handle a gun to buy one. I think all schools should have a firearm saftey program. My school did last year and it let kids know how to handle guns, load them, and what to do and what not to do with them. The guns were incapapable of firing an actual round or even going off if you pulled the trigger, and we used blanks so it was completely safe. The big point was to let kids know what to do when hunting and when to run if a Columbine-type situation happened at our school. But just because some peole are stupid with them doesn't give someone else to take away your protection. About the deer, though. The deer that most people try to kill are old. While I only agree with hunting if you are in serious need of food, I think that killing an older, mature buck is better than killing a young one. I don't like hunting at all, but if your area is overpopulated, I would rather someone kill a six- or seven-year-old buck than a one-year-old.
  7. Speaking of off topic, what does this whole thread have to do with Animals and Environments anyway?
  8. Well, when I posted it, I was thinking about how some people think that guns corrupt our envioment and kill animals and such. But then I started writing it, and got off my origional idea, and now we are here. If you can't tell, I have a quite hard time staying on topic.
  9. The right to own a gun and use a gun is granted in the Bill of Rights of our Constitution. As a Republican, I also see guns as a part of the American tradition. At the beginning of our nation's history, people hunted for food. People still hunt for food. It's the government's job to prosecute, jail, and confiscate the guns of those who break established laws related to guns and other similar weapons.
  10. You're allowed to vote at seventeen? Which state allows that?
  11. Wait. Say what?! What state lets you vote at seventeen?! I'm so moving there!
  12. I'm confused. You said you were a Republican and your profile says that you're seventeen. So I assumed that your state allows voting at seventeen.
  13. Oh, okay, I get it. Yes, I'm seventeen, and, yes, I'm a Republican. But just because I know what political party I run with doesn't mean I'm allowed to vote...yet. Just four more months, and I'll be legal, though. :D
