Are you a horse-crazy person?

12 posts in this topic.

  1. So, the good ol' Equus...
(of course, this refers to antthing in the horse range: zebras, donkeys and onagers)
This graceful animal seems to appeal to many especially me.
    So, what is your opinion?
What breeds do you most prefer?
Have you ever been close to a wild horse? (I have, I have!)
Do you own one, or been in any contests?
Do you know any really amazing facts?

Then share them here, where we can pointlessly rabble on and not get yelled at.
  2. haha.
i accidentally put the 'yes' i don't believe in unicorns.
    woops.

I love horses! Breathe horses. I want a horse!
I have terribly lousy luck with them recently though (anybody have a spare one rotting in a paddock for me???) first with the riding school 'project' pony i had who was sold, then the next one i rode for a year and was in utter love with got sold, then the subsequent 2 i rode after that were put down, and the one i rode and nearly bought got sold from under me, and the horse i had on lease, well, the lease got cancelled.

love, breathe, live horses. Cannot ever imagine myself without one.
  3. I do not (currently) own a horse, but I have ridden since I was nine, and really love anything to do with them. They really are cool creatures, aren't they? I have been within five hundred yards of a wild horse, but no closer. :)

I ride both English and Western style, but my favorite is bareback. I also would help out at a stable, teaching the kids in summer camps about the tack, and riding in general. I also have done some dressage practice and low jumps. I moved two years ago, and haven't done much riding since then, but I'd like to.
  4. So, what is your opinion? LOVE them! They are the best animals in the world!

What breeds do you most prefer? I prefer Mustangs, Halflingers, Quarter horses, and ESPECIALLY Arabians.

Have you ever been close to a wild horse? Kind of. He'd been bred on a farm but not handled AT ALL until he was three years old. A GORGEOUS tri-color stud, about 15 hands. My neighbor now owns him, but no one ever deals with him. I've actually been secretly working with him, gentling him.

Do you own one, or been in any contests? I don't own any now, but I have owned nine and bottled raised one from two weeks old.

Do you know any really amazing facts? Hmmm...none, really. At least, I don't think.
  5. I like horses but I don't love them. I was obssessed with them for a year or two though. I took riding lessons for about a year and loved it. :)
  6. Nah, I'm not much of a horse person. I took riding lessons for like a month (I was young) and got scared of the horse. O_O And I haven't much gotten into horses since them.

  7. I said that I'm a horse-crazy person but I'm not really crazy about them. I think that horses are really cute but I don't know anything about them. I also love the word equine!
  8. So, what is your opinion? Amazing if you get the right one

What breeds do you most prefer? Brumbies, Welsh Mountain Ponies, Appaloosas and Warmbloods

Have you ever been close to a wild horse? No. I wish.

Do you own one, or been in any contests? I have never owned, I have leased though. I did a 70cm sj competition a few years back, kind of recently did a 1m jumping course for a pony club comp, got 6th out of 10 lol.

Do you know any really amazing facts? That roan coloured horses change colour everytime spring rolls around and they shed their winter coat, then in autumn as they grow their winter coat!
  9. I love horses. I was always the girl who ran around the playground cantering and whinnying. Oh, and I can't forget the collection of toy horses that are still sitting on my shelves. They all have their own names - Ginger, Belle, Cobalt - and even though I haven't played with them for years I can't stand to get rid of them. I've been riding for two or three years now and worked at a local barn last summer.

Right now, I'm trying to decide if I love them enough to go to college to get a degree that relates to them. Dogs have always, always been my first love, but there's no college for dog trainers and my parents are insisting that I attend some kind of college. So I don't know. Do I like horses enough to spend four years in college with them? I'm trying to figure it out.

I really don't have that much experience with different breeds, but I'd have to say that my favorite breed is the Thoroughbred. I've never been close to a wild horse, unfortunately, and I've never owned one either. I'd like to, but my parents won't even get me a second dog, so I don't see it happening.

  10. Update:

I have begun Horse Shows. You know, Westren Pleasure and Adult-Class Riding, and the like? My cousin runs her own horse rescue and training center, and yeah, she convinced me to try them. What's cool is the horse I'll be riding was given to us for free last Christmas. Kimmie is a fourteen hand mare - 25 years old, though - recently retired from barrel racing. It's awesome riding her! Well, when she's in a good mood.

Kimmie is tricky to ride. First two times I ever rode her, she either did donut in the driveway, literally spinning on one hoof; or she started bucking. But we've settled our differences; I figured out that it was the saddle, being a piece of crap like it is,
rubbing blisters on her belly and the fact that we don't have a proper bridle with reins. No, we're clipping leadlines to her halter to serve as a reined-bridle. Not a good idea.

Either way, it is still thoroughly enjoyable. I have decided: I am most definately going to be a veterinarian.
  11. Ooh, I love talking about horses!

I love our equine friends. I have since I was very small and preferred playing with toy horses than Barbies :D And still own all of my toy horses, even the ones with broken legs. They all have names and I even made stalls for them once upon a time out of shoe boxes.

Friesians, Gypsy Vanners, Shires, Andalusians, Paints, Mustangs, Fjords and TWH (Tennessee Walkers) are some of my favourite breeds. TWH, not so much for their looks, but have you ridden one? I felt like I was flying!

I've been bucked off twice, bitten, kicked and have had a few "accidents". But never felt discouraged to stop riding. I couldn't imagine life without horses. How sappy that sounds.

I've never had riding lessons. My old gelding, Chip, is the one who taught me how to ride and balance properly. I'm going to sink into depression when he dies. I own three currently, including Chip, and have owned eight altogether.

That is so sad and funny at the same time. :(
