Well, I'm working on a fictional universe (of course) and I have three races of people....Fleirzon: winged people, Hamoiin: ground-dwellers, basically humans, and Asae: people of the sea who have bioluminescent markings, scales, fins, etc (think mermaids only cooler, more fish-y)
The problem is, I need the Hamoiin to have powers. But I don't want to do something that's been done a thousand and ten times. Non-magical is number one. It's way to trite for me.
Any ideas are very much appreciated.
Thanks!

You could always pick a more typical magical ability and rework it to be more original. Then it's still semi-familiar to a reader, but it's also unique.
A power could also dereive from a part of their culture. What do they value? Why do they value it? Could a magical ability fit into that value?
Though you don't want to use it, non-magical can leave a lot of ground for tension. In my current project, there is one country where the people don't have their magic anymore. It was taken from them for some reason I'm not sure of yet, and because of that they hold serious grudges against every other country where the people have magic. They're also bound and determined to get their magic back by whatever - usually violent - means neccessary.
Basically, don't underestimate those old used power forms. They can always be made as unique as imagining up your own form of magic.

Well, I'm going to echo part of what Lauren said--what's important to them as a culture? What are their primary exports/crops? What do they struggle with?
I also think I'm a little confused by your question. Did you mean you were looking for non-magical abilities, or just magical abilities that weren't overused?
