Maps

  1. Before I can continue with my novel, I need to draw a load of maps.

Now, I'm an absolutely horrible drawer, and I really don't know how I'll do these.

How do you draw maps? Any tips?
  2. Easiest answer for me to say is quite simply... Adobe Photoshop. You can do it in paint, or use pen and paper then fill it out, but the beauty and majesty of fine precise layered maps works best.
  3. yup i just use photoshop CS4 .... i put layers over my world ..... one layer is boundaries, one is terrain, one is cities and so on. there are some map making programs out there, but i don't think they are worth the money....
  4. Hehe, this probably isn't helpful, but once I was trying to draw a map by hand, and spilled tea all over it, but the line of the stain actually looked better, so I traced it...

But anyway, even if you don't have photoshop, most computers have a built in "paint" type program, which can be used quite effectively to draw simple maps.
  5. I like to draw maps using MS paint. You'd be surprised how easy it is. Here's one I made for a fantasy novel I've been writing off and on for about a year now. If you have a general idea of what you're trying to make, then I find it's pretty simple to draw some squiggly lines and then fill them with color.

  6. If I ever find a photocopier or something that I can use, I can make some really good hand-drawn maps (if I do say so myself :P ) PM me and I'll see if I can get a picture with a camera or something to show you what I do.
