Book 1: The Librarianist, Patrick deWitt
Genres: Adult Fiction, Historical Fiction
I would rate this around 2.5 - 3 stars. The author tells the story of Bob, a 71-year-old retired librarian who starts to volunteer at a senior center. We are given segments of his life during his many years of life so far in Oregon, going through his marriage, his best friend, running away from his house at the age of 11, and some other various characters that pop up on screen. I think it’s well-written prose, highlighting the character of Bob and how he views the world, but there were certain characters I enjoyed a lot more than others, which unfortunately we saw less of. There was some unnecessary vulgarity I’d say, but this was adult fiction so I was expecting some sections to reflect that. Overall, interesting enough read. -
Book 2: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Genres: Romance, Fantasy (Romantasy), New Adult.
I would rate this around 3.5 stars. This book is about a military academy that young adults enter (all over the age of 18/19 I think) and basically have to keep themselves alive while trying to garner the interest of a dragon. Since they’re learning to become riders. (Well, the main characters are.) The main female character is named Violet, who is the daughter of a high ranking general in the military, and she has to deal with basically the fantasy equivalent of an auto-immune disorder and ya know people trying to kill her. This is more of a New Adult book so there was some vulgarity and sexual scenes, in case you want a heads-up on that. I did enjoy the premise and writing style, but I think the plot meandered a little too much for me and I didn’t especially enjoy the ending. -
Book 3: Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
Genres: Romance, Fantasy (Romantasy), New Adult
I would rate this book around 2.5 stars. It's the sequel to Fourth Wing but was a little over another 100 pages longer, totaling past 600 pages, which was a lot. I think that overall, there were too many plot lines and ideas tossed into a single book, and whole characters seemed to be forgotten about or lost in the shuffle of a large number of events in a small amount of time. I was disappointed with this book, mainly because it felt like there were some interesting things about to happen, but I disliked some of the character dynamics and how they would respond/react to what was happening, as well. I don't know if I want to read the rest of the series -- D : -
Book 4: So This Is Ever After by F. T. Lukens
Genres: LGBT Romance, Fantasy, Young Adult
I would rate this book around 3.75 stars! It’s exactly what I wanted — something totally light, something totally easy and something simple to read. I liked how the characters were sweet/trying to help the main characters when they decided to not listen to anything at all. Miscommunication tropes are kind of my favorite even though they annoy me the whole time. I kind of feel satisfied after they finally talk and discuss their feelings. XD I really liked the author’s writing style — although some descriptions were a little too … plain/blasé/ordinary for this to be taking place in a fantasy world. If I were to pitch this, it’s basically the story of what comes after the big bad guy dies on an adventure. It was silly, it was funny, it was a liiitle immature but everyone was a teenager, so it makes sense. And there’s no spicy scenes — fades to black if anyone is wondering c:
