Curious if anyone else has seen the movie "Project Hail Mary" and sensed a lot of Christian themes throughout? What did you see / notice? What did you learn? Any other movies out there that are "explicitly Christian" and yet have very clear spiritual themes present?
Here's what I saw...
Main character's name is LITERALLY "Grace"! - God's Grace is also a "main character" of the Bible - it is the unexpected way God saves the whole world through the grace of forgiveness won by the death of His son. And in the movie, the main character "Grace" embodies that unexpected world-saving power. (He fights against it for sure! And yet he is "compelled" to do what he has been called to)!
Grace as a Christ Figure - All fictional / non-fictional characters outside of Jesus Christ, are always going to be "imperfect" Christ-figures, (like the Biblical motifs of David, Joseph, Moses, etc.) and yet they can point us to truths about the TRUE Savior... what's similar to Grace + Jesus, and what's different?
Main supporting character is named "Rocky" - Well we all know another main supporting character who goes by "The Rock" right? Peter! whose name means "The Rock" and is also a human embodiment of the Church "Upon this rock I will build my church". Rocky opens up a new possibility for humans to live, survive and thrive - and he offers this out of love. How does that play into Rocky being a "Peter" character? or a metaphor for "the church"? Christ calls the Church his bride. And Grace and Rocky do have a mutually supportive, loving, and sacrificial relationship to each other.
Title of film... "Hail Mary" - While a "Hail Mary" in modern jargon often just means a "last ditch effort" / or a "last chance" it comes from the Ave Maria prayer... which comes from a passage in Luke 1:28, "Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you." (which Gabriel says unto Mary)... could the space-ship that Grace is in be a little symbol of Mary's body? Hmm. Interesting. Jesus entered earth through being born of Mary, and ultimately Mary's heart had to be pierced as part of the plan of salvation - she too suffered at the death of Jesus. Grace's spaceship takes a hit, and yet it also shelters and carries Grace's body to where it must go to win the "salvation" of the world.
Cinematography There is a gorgeous scene where Grace is standing in front of an illuminated circular doorway that has LOTS of Resurrection out of the Tomb vibes. I will see if I can find a picture of it later, but maybe you know the one I'm talking about!

Okay I WILL expand on this more because my mind is constant filled with this movie, and also spoilers, but, Ryland Grace Sacrificing himself for humanity, and being scared to do so, but later not regretting doing so in a bittersweet way, and finding someone he loves so much he would die for them. Reminded me of how Jesus loves us so much, and yet pleased with His, that if there was another way let us be that way, and yet he still was and let himself be sacrificed because he thought we were worth the pain.

Okay I love this thread and the connections you both have made so far!! The Hail Mary representing Mary's body - wow.
A more literal example, but the credits song ("Glory Glory") struck me as a significant tone to tie up the story with:- Glory, glory, hallelujah

I’m goin’ home to be with Jesus
Since I laid my burdens down!
For me these lyrics speak to Grace's contentedness with his current life on Erid. He's saved the world (hallelujah), he's done his job (his burden), and now he's found new purpose as a teacher again. He's "home" ... or is he? It's open-ended!
To further the Grace as a Christ Figure theme, Jesus is often referred to as "the teacher" and of course loves children (though the book leans into the latter more than the film does).
The Beatles (the probes) would then be... the disciples? Spreading the good news and what they've "learned" from Grace, and bringing salvation to the whole world. With Rocky as Peter, of course - love that!
