Have been going to therapy for the first time, and my therapist is in agreement that I have inattentive ADHD. Yay for validation! I'd really like to get an official diagnosis, but apparently my healthcare provider doesn't offer ADHD assessments anymore?? Are we going backwards in time? :/ I'd like to share all these new things I've learned about myself with certain loved ones like my parents, but I'm worried they won't take me seriously if I'm only self-diagnosed.

Anyway, on the bright side, I'm definitely giving myself more grace in certain areas in my life. I didn't realize how much shame I was carrying - I had this ingrained belief that I was lazy and unambitious and just needed to try harder, and it's a relief to know that there's more going on. I'm starting a new chapter where I'm learning to work with my brain and its limitations instead of holding myself to neurotypical standards. Do I wish I had started this chapter earlier, like before all those years of nightly hw procrastination and little sleep? YES >.< but it could be worse! I could've lived my whole life without even knowing inattentive ADHD was a thing!

If you want to learn more about the two different kinds of ADHD, check out this article for a list of the 18 symptoms they use to diagnose folks.

I have gone through the same exact thing and completely understand. In terms of sharing with family, tell them your therapist said she thinks you have ADHD. You don’t need to even tell them you’re the one who first mentioned it. Most people aren’t familiar enough with healthcare or therapy to know that doesn’t count as an official diagnosis—regardless, it gives a little more “officialness” to it, even if that shouldn’t be necessary (because self-diagnosis should be valid in a world where it is increasingly hard and EXPENSIVE to get a professional diagnosis!)

So happy for you that you have some answers <333 I know how it feels, and I’m glad you’ve got some relief.
