I want to have a second draft of my 2016 NaNovel (working title: Magic Words) on paper by June.
The first draft was a classic NaNo pants affair - no plot, no point, many words. For the second draft, I'm trying out the [url="https://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/articles/snowflake-method/"]snowflake method[/url], so that the whole thing feels a bit less like a pointless pile of angst.

I've been on holiday for the last week, but I did have a chat with a friend about some of my Magic Words stuff while I was away. We identified a fundamental issue with what I have so far, i.e. the MC is currently the least interesting character. Good to have picked this up at this stage - that's meant to be one of the points of the Snowflake Method, after all.
Now I have two options:
1) Work out something that the alleged MC is trying to do, rather than having her sit there and take events passively like she currently does
2) Rejig the whole thing so that one of the other characters is the MC
I want to do (1), but I wonder if (2) might actually work better, and I'm just hung up on the fact that this has always been intended to be story about the current alleged MC.

I have gone with (1), possibly against my better judgement.
I want to at least get a list of scenes written up for Magic Words by the start of April. That's because during April itself, I'm going to have a different goal: NaPoWriMo! Then I can come back to the scene list in May, and actually start writing them up.
So:
* Write up scene list for Magic Words by Mar 30
* Write 30 poems during April for NaPoWriMo (thread here: Hopes and Fears of a Sleeping Dragon ) -
Okay, soooo. I failed at the scene list. I really lost motivation on that, and I'm back in that kind of mode where thinking about Magic Words fills me with really bad kinds of self-defence ting thoughts. SO. I am taking a break from it, and turning my thoughts back to the novel I was thinking about before I started revising Magic Words - let's codename it Sword in a Stone. It seems like a good idea to have two things on the go - then when I start to lag on one, I can switch focus back to the other.
On the bright side, we're a week into April and I am well caught up with NaPo! Plus y'all keep saying nice things about my poems, which is excellent for my ego

In May I've got two long flights, on my own, so I want to be prepared to put those to good use writing, if I'm awake enough. Need to see if my Chromebook still works...
So:
* Finish 30 poems for NaPo
* Optional extra: also finish the NaPo poem a day and garden challenges
* Work out what writing tools to take away in May -

NaPo report: currently on-track for NaPo completion, poem-a-day AND the garden challenge, so, go me!
I am going to sit down and work out logistics for going away in May at the weekend, so I'll take care of sorting out the Chromebook etc then.
Also in unexpected good progress recently:
* wrote a short story for my final writing class (...immediately before the class, i.e. while travelling from work to there... but hey, STILL COUNTS)
* have written a handful of disjointed scenes for Sword in a Stone, which give me a little bit of a framework to try hanging other scenes around -
NaPo report: complete! And I managed poem-a-day and the garden challenge, hooray!
It turns out my Chromebook has bricked itself (through too many months of disuse, I assume?), so I won't be writing with that on the plane. But I have stacked up two notebooks and two pens, which is good enough.
New goals:
* Work out what kind of things I could write for The Summer Outside Your Comfort Zone
* Write at least two pages of Sword in a Stone on my first set of flights. (Small goals, highly achievable! Writing more pages is a bonus.)
* Write at least half a page of Sword in a Stone across the second set of flights/holiday. (Smaller goal here, because I'm going to be with a big, distracting group for this stage!) -
Two pages of Sword in a Stone on flight #1 : achieved!
The Summer Outside Your Comfort Zone ideas: I have one (which I posted a tiny teaser of the other day). New goal: write this idea to completion.
Current Goals
* Finish first piece for The Summer Outside Your Comfort Zone
* Write more Sword in a Stone on flight #2 (at least half a page)
* Decide whether new clockwork-magic Shiny is worth pursuing right now; if so, write at least one page of actual scene for it (i.e. not planning notes) -
Achieved!
* Wrote a little more Sword in a Stone (on flight #3 rather than #2 , but shh, still counts)
* Finished and posted Disco 2000s for #outsideyourcomfortzone
* Decided not to pursue the new clockwork-magic Shiny right now
To Do
* Think of second thing for #outsideyourcomfortzone
* Write more Sword in a Stone! Either while on holiday, or on flight #4 -

I did write a couple of pages of a new draft of Magic Words a couple of weeks ago, which is good! Perhaps I will set myself a mini goal for this afternoon: write at least one more sentence of that draft. -
