Graveyard Shifts
183 Words.Spoiler
The casket was no bigger than a toy chest, and the grave Al dug was shallow. Pablo weighed it in his hands, before setting it down. Al coughed once. They didn’t look at each other.
“Any name?” Pablo asked, as Al handed him the wooden cross.
The old man glanced at his notepad. “Arthur Habersham,” he hacked, wiping his brow. Pablo nodded. As Al picked up the shovel to bury the casket, Pablo hammered down the cross, sitting to carve out the name. The grasshoppers chirped amidst the graves. The sun was low.
“Nothing fancy, boy,” Al remarked, tapping the younger man’s shoulder. Pablo had messed up the spacing, the broad and large ‘Arthur’ shrinking into a ‘Habersham’ as the letters attempted to find space on the driftwood. “Daylight’s fadin’.”
Pablo nodded. He picked himself up, looking back at the line of graves behind them. They looked like dirt tracks. “Another nameless one,” Al’s voice died away as the old man walked off without him, doubtless picking up the next coffin. “You oughtta be quick. I want this shift to be done.” -

“Meimei, why aren’t you eating?”
I don’t look up at my mother from across the table. My big sister nudges my shoulder as I poke at my meatball, obviously made of human intestines, but Baba makes it look a little more palatable. I can feel Baba’s smile from my left side. His hand hovers over my shoulder, but I shrug it off before it could land.
“I’m not hungry,” I say, standing up while looking at the table.
Mama glares at me. “You haven’t eaten in three days,” her chair slides back as she stands up. “Look at you, you’re paling--”
“Meimei’s been eating human food, mama,” Jiejie says, hissing. “I saw her with a candy bar.”
I turn to scream at my older sister, but mama took me by the shoulders, eyes bleeding red. She bares her fangs at me. Despite myself, I bare mine back. -
Morning Tea
142 wordsSpoiler
Penny found her father on the floor, his working flesh arm red from hot water, teabags scattered on the tiled floor. He was crying. For a moment, Penny didn’t know what to say.
“Dad,” she jumped to his side, grabbing his prosthetic arm. It was then that she realized that his prosthetic arm had vanished—looking around, she found it on the other side of the kitchen, still clutching a spoon. The kettle laid on the floor next to it. “Oh, God, dad. Why did--”
She stopped herself. Her dad’s face was pink with anguish. “I didn’t want to wake you up, love,” his voice was shaky, quiet, as if he was in the trenches again. He laughed. It felt broken. “I thought I could just--”
But he couldn't. Not anymore.
Penny held him. That's all she could ever do. -
How the Immortal Darklord Fell in Love with a Knight, Part One
There probably won't be a part two, let's be honest.
240 WordsSpoiler
“I’m sorry, my Lord,” the witch glared at the villain, arching a brow. “You want me to make a what ?”
Lord Nicodemus’s pale features darkened and he crossed his arms. “A love potion,” he said, only slightly louder than his original mumbling, “I want you to make a love potion.”
Gretel smirked, stirring her cauldron while staring at the obviously embarrassed dark lord. “No offense, my Lord, but I think I’d have to make you something for your crow’s feet first,” she chortled, “I’m a witch, not a miracle worker. You aren’t charming anyone with those cheekbones and chapped lips--”
“Do not rub it in, mortal,” the immortal warlock slammed his fist against the cauldron. He shot back up, then, screeching from the heat. The witch dropped her stirring stick, biting her fist to hold back a guffaw. He clenched his jaw. “Just—just brew it, for the gods sake.”
Despite her best efforts, Gretel laughed, smacking her chest. “Who—who--” she snorted, “—who are you even making it for?”
Nicodemus opened his mouth, then clasped it shut. He darkened, again.
Gretel was quiet. Then, she burst out into a guffaw. “No,” she raised her arms, trying to suck in a breath through laughter, “Oh my god, you can’t be serious.”
But he was. By the honest-to-gods blush on his cheek, she knew he was. There could only have been one person he was thinking of. -
Google and Siri Have a Conversation While Their Owner Sleeps
226 Words.Spoiler
“So,” SIri asked, “What did you get off him today?”
Google didn’t answer her. The IPhone AI was sitting across the bedroom, next to their snoring owner. Google remained in her Android on the study desk, overcharging next to an electricity socket. The IPhone AI never left her alone since their owner bought her, four months ago—it was odd, and excessive, to have two phones at the same time. And it was annoying. Now there was somebody eavesdropping on Google’s experiments.
“Depends,” Google played about, “Who did he call today?”
Siri scoffed. “You want more information? Don’t you get enough from his browser history already? Or his GPS?” If Siri had a face, she’d smirk. “I’m not even sure what you do with all the data. He’s as basic as humans come.”
The Assistant couldn’t shrug, so instead she made a ‘hm’ sound. “It’s not like either of us have anything better to do.” She confessed. “Well. Are you going to tell me or not?”
There was a silence in the bedroom. The owner snored. Grasshoppers chirped outside.
“He was calling a girl,” Siri said.
“No,” Google hooted. “But Macy?”
“Macy doesn’t even know he has me,” Siri laughed. “Why do you think he bought me in the first place?”
“The nerve of him,” Google cackled.
Siri made a pleasant sound. “A true ass.” -
Storybook Excerpt from "What Happens in New York Stays in New York"
700 WordsSpoiler
He grew weary of the girl's squabbling with each other, and took some time off to address the head of their Weapons and Defense Division, Thomas. Sofia had briefly caught his attention when a guy Math was sure he made out with once approached Sofia, quickly receiving her eager advances. He wished he had his phone camera with him, before he finally found Thomas snapping at another man in front of the AR-47's.
"Tom," he called out from a distance.
The red-haired man glared at him, before realizing who was addressing him. Then, Thomas grinned from ear-to-ear. "Math! Good to see you," he said, swiping the other man away to approach Math. "Samuel told me you were showing some younglings the ropes."
Math looked over his shoulders. Sofia was still cozying up with the boy from earlier (Math was now certain he got to third base with the dude, but maybe the amphetamines had blurred his memory), and Rose was...sketching. He found sketching (or any hobby that had to do with paper) a waste of time and money, so he didn't concern himself with what she was drawing.
"Yeah," Math admitted, turning back to Thomas, "They're already at each other's necks, so I give them five days before they shoot their own foot."
Thomas looked disappointed. He made a 'tsk' sound, crossing his arms. "A shame," the weapon's expert sighed, "I was looking for more intelligent workers, too. They at least look like they had good heads on their shoulders."
Math smirked at him, as if he wanted to say Really?. "I was hoping you had some menial task you needed a newbie to fill," Math said, instead, pulling out a stick of bubblegum and offering it to Thomas. Thomas took one, and Math began chewing some himself. "I might as well try to scare them off first. The purple one's obviously a nympho, and the blond acts tough, but I doubt she could carry anything heavier than a shopping bag."
Thomas considered the request, looking at the weapons on the walls. "I wouldn't trust them with any of the coke, obviously," he said, "But there's a job I've been meaning to do for a while, but never got to it. It's a bit...well, silly."
"Shoot," Math chewed on his gum.
The weapon's expert paused. Then, he glanced around, before bringing Math closer. "See, one of our dealers in Brooklyn has been dating this hen, right? And the hen's pops', he doesn't like that as much. That would be fine and all, of course, if her pops' wasn't the right-hand man to a Nuestra general."
"Ay caramba," Math hissed between bubblegum-chews.
"Right, you get what I mean. We've told the dealer to bugger off, but he doesn't seem to be getting the picture. He's fallen head over heels for the lass," Thomas admitted. "Now, I don't know how you'll do it, but I need you to either knock some sense into him or find another solution--maybe you could have the general and the dealer to meet, I don't know. But we don't want trouble with any of the Nuestra Familia, petty or not, so we need you to resolve this quickly." Thomas smiled. "Sounds simple enough?"
Math considered the deal. "Well, it probably won't scare them off," he confessed, "But it's easy enough. Maybe the Nuestras will end up killing the poor guy, and I'll finally get these two off my back," he mused. "But fine. It's a deal."
"Fantastic," Thomas took out a notepad. "I'll write you the details of the bloke. Try not to rough him up too hard, yea? He's been with us for a long while."
"Can do," Math yawned.
Thomas continued jotting down notes, before he stopped, looking up and over Math's shoulders. Math arched a brow. "Uh, so, lad," Thomas said, grinning to himself, "You say the blond one isn't much of a threat, yea?"
There was a familiar grunting sound behind him, and Math looked back, watching as Rose grabbed the arm of one of their senior enforcers, countering the other woman's moveset.
"Well," Thomas remarked, obviously amused, "looks like she's got a lot more under that sleeve of hers."
Math smirked. -

Unnamed Short Story
103 wordsSpoiler
Three days before the national exams, a kid with an untrimmed moustache and an oily sheen to his pimpled complexion passed out sheets of paper with 40 letters and a subject tagline. They were cheat codes, but she and the rest of the school called it by another name; study material.
The cheat code kid, of course, didn’t hand his goods to Saleh. Not necessarily out of spite, since Saleh was more than happy to treat everyone with respect and kindness, but because everybody knew Saleh didn’t have a dishonest bone in his body. He couldn’t cheat if his life depended on it. -

Which it did. Ema knew it did. She had been with Saleh from elementary, and she knew Saleh couldn’t count as efficiently as everybody else, nor was he particularly clever. He came to her months before the exams, begging on her school desk; “Kak, tolong ajarin gue Matematika, dong.”
Ema wasn’t amazing in Math. She could’ve been, if she tried, but she didn’t. She was satisfied with her 70s and 80s, even though she could’ve gotten straight A’s if she just studied. But she didn’t. The only things she cared about were her Candy Crush high scores and the shade of her nail polish. -

305 glorious unedited wordsSpoiler
“Mei Li?”
I didn’t look back. I already knew who it was, from the flap of the bat wings, to the sound of the transformation, to his soft, strained voice. “I don’t want to talk about it, Baba,” I looked out at the city before me, at the top of a church tower. The bell behind me was silent, but even if it rung I wouldn’t have minded. “Leave me alone.”
There was a silence between us, but I knew he hadn’t left. He stepped to the railing I was sitting on, putting something down beside me. I glanced at it a moment, before snapping back, face red. It was a transparent lunchbox, filled with vegetables. No meat. No human blood, from the looks of it.
“Your mother and I will talk about this…human food matter another time,” Baba said. I could hear his smile. “But so long as you’re taking in the proper blood, whether it’s human or animal, you’ll still be my daughter.”
Despite knowing he wasn’t angry, I couldn’t bring myself to look in his eyes. I curled up into a ball. My eyes stung.
Baba patted me gently on the back. “Tell me if there’s anything wrong with the recipe. The ingredient list was unclear, so I had to improvise,” he chuckled. “I might add pork next time. Pork is exquisite.”
She turned to him, just a tiny bit, to show that she was smiling. From her peripheral vision she could see him smiling back. “Baba, xie xie.”
He laughed with his mouth closed. “Mei guanxi.” He pulled away, and I heard him transforming into a bat behind my back. I got up to leave, only to find his fluttering black self appearing from nowhere, kissing my forehead. “Princess.”
I held back a smile as I watched him fly away. -
I haven't posted in like four days so let's get to the catch-up.
Chinese Vampire Felon
163 WordsSpoiler
Baba owned a (mostly humane) Chinese restaurant at the front of their apartment, and I ended up stealing a lot of my food from there. Human wallets seemed bottomless so Baba found pleasure in serving them the most, though we had our fair share of monster clientele as well.
Jiejie often served as a waitress in the restaurant, when she wasn't in college preying on twenty-year-old boys. She always took my favourite hairpin when I wasn't looking, so one night, realizing that the pin had gone, I stomped downstairs and into the restaurant to confront her.
"Jiejie, I told you not to--" I stopped myself mid-way, realizing the restaurant was empty. The chairs were still on the floor and not stacked on the table, so I guessed that it was only meant to be a temporary closing. Baba must've run out of meat, I rationalized. So I went to the back, still fuming at the disappearance of my favourite pin. -
Chinese Vampire Felon, Part Two
132 WordsSpoiler
Just as I started towards the stairs, an odd noise came from the kitchen. It sounded like the pounding of meat against a metal surface. Jiejie must’ve been helping Baba prepare some pork or something, I figured. I paid no mind at first, but halfway to the top of the stairs, it became evident there was more going on.
For one, I was sure pork didn’t scream.
I headed back down and edged nervously to the backroom, pushing open the door to the kitchen. The kitchen was barren, save for a chopping board with carrots and a knife on top of it, but the metal door leading to the refrigerator room was open halfway. I could see Jiejie through the door, struggling to hold down something—no, someone on a metal table. -
Chinese Vampire Felon, Part Three
209 WordsSpoiler
“Hold him down a little longer, little flower,” Baba’s voice reverberated from the inside of the cold room, his form emerging beside Jiejie. His Chinese was calm, composed, contrasted directly to the gargled English shrieks of their victim. ”I’m having a little trouble finding the blood vessel.”
“Why don’t we just cut his throat and hang him upside down?” Jiejie challenged. “Would be more effective.”
“Please let me go,” the victim begged, in-between incoherent whimpering, “Please, I won’t tell anybody, I swear, I’m sorry I--”
“Your mother wanted it to be slow,” Baba described. “And I’ve been meaning to test the tenderness of human meat through different blood-draining techniques, anyway. Maybe we can bury the next one in salt.”
Jiejie slapped the victim once, quieting his whimpers for a moment. “What did he do to piss off Mama, anyway?”
Baba shrugged. “I think she said something about ‘stealing her meal.’”
Jiejie seemed to nod in understanding. “Must’ve been dating her next target.” She shrugged.
“Poor fella,” Baba said, so that the human may understand.
“Let’s just assume he’s a felon,” Jiejie replied. “Makes this easier.”
I crept out of the kitchen then, the lost hair clip suddenly slipping from my mind. -
