Scylla is somewhere in between. She doesn't want to, but she does. And Cassandra feels very awkward in the starting and doesn't know what to say, but eventually gets over that and considers them her parents.

So how do they learn to control their magic? Are their friends also witches and wizards or are they mortal?

Cassandra's friends are witches but Scylla's aren't.
They have many training facilities around the world where they train witches and wizards once they make the choice to accept their wizard life. -
Do people use magic for things outside of combat and fighting? Is it part of everyday life, or is it just a higher power that's only used in special circumstances?

Yes and no
It depends on the life you pick. After going through learning and using magic for a couple of years, every person faces a choice.
They can either take a job in the magic world, and this life means using magic in everyday life, not just while on your job. It also means that their family will experience a life which has magic in it, so most people pick life partners who made the same choice earlier, or if they don't, they compromise their living.
Or they can also pick a normal life, it still has occasional magic in it, but it is mainly about having a non-magic job, have children studying in normal schools, and so on.If you are wondering why someone would pick the latter, ask here. This has got nothing to do with me wanting to talk about it

One of the coolest things I feel is that about how the training facility works.
Every student goes through a test at the beginning which determines their personality type, and according to that, they are assigned a particular teacher. Every teacher is assigned a particular number of students, and a lot of teachers prefer teaching students individually. This is more about the teacher's style.
All students live in dormitories which are separated into 2 sections- girls and boys, and they have a common lounge with a built-in food court, a library, and enough room for 150 people (student count is usually between 150-200).
The common lounge is pretty much the comfiest place teens could ask for.
The relationship between students and teachers is also very casual, because of which even years after finishing training, most students (I'm talking 95%) remain in touch with their teachers.
Training time also varies, every student has a particular training plan, which is usually different from others, and even how fast or slow the student learns comes into consideration.
The shortest time is 3 years- Andromeda's learning time.
