There’s a scientist (Dr. Reid) who works for the Governor (though unwillingly). And the plot twist involving him is that he’s Cove’s uncle.

Oh, cool! Does Dr. Reid end up helping the protagonists, since he doesn't want to work for the governor in the first place?

He does help them escape from the lab, but he’s done some terrible things to protect his daughter (another mutant, named Opal). So he ends up getting arrested.

Oh no! What were those terrible things, if you don't mind me asking?

He performed painful and torturous experiments on several mutants, including Cove, in order to keep the Governor happy. Even though he eventually became remorseful, it was too late for him to be outright redeemed.

Yeah, those are definitely some terrible things! I am surprised that he's arrested - it seems like people don't really care for mutants in your world, and I would have thought they wouldn't have really cared about them getting hurt.

I mean, you could probably work around that if you figure out a way for people to suddenly like them! You could take inspiration from the civil rights movements by having some horrific act committed by the authorities on a streaming service - like how things like the march in Selma were filmed on national television, and showed everyone how bad things were. (I've been taking an American Protest class this year so civil rights stuff is on my mind right now.)
Skipping a little far ahead, what do your protagonists do after the story ends? -
They mostly just try to live a normal life. Cove actually becomes a social worker for kids like him, when he’s an adult. (I don’t actually plan to write about that directly, but I’ll mention it in passing, lol)

I love that idea so much. <3 There's just something wonderful about seeing characters who have been through a lot wanting to help people in situations like them.
I forget if I already asked this or not, but does Cove end up in a relationship with anyone? -

He does have a crush on Iris at first, but she’s a little too old for him. By the end, they’re both happy with remaining friends. -
Did they actually date, or did they just decide it was for the best to stay as friends?

The second option Iris already has a boyfriend (named Gabriel; I can’t remember if I mentioned him yet)
