Alright, it seems we're not getting any support from voters. Thanks anyway for the push on advertising Silver!
As the single judge, I'm going to be as fair as possible, and judge these entries by the ideas laid out in the original post. I wanted entries that gave a glimpse into these worlds, a poke behind the curtain. Things that were fascinating and original in their own right, but hinted at so much more, raised questions with me, made me want to know more.
And so, here's our ranking. The lowest rank is unfortunately going to be knocked out of the competition. Just know that this was extremely close-- Everyone's was pretty great in it's own right. Anyway, here we are!
First Place- @haredrier
This was really great. Each guardian is fascinating in their own right, and alludes to much more about the world. The twins of the plains and forest, siding with orcs and humans, the immortal swords-man telling tales of his kin-- It was really interesting, and very well told. I especially liked the detail of the Great Oak, who is only tentatively regarded as a Guardian, and the mysterious beings on the mountain peaks.
Second Place- @TheSilverFox
Coming closely behind was Silvers realm. What I really liked was how the religion felt lost in a maze of mythology. The text really felt like someone picking through dozens of names and rumours, old legends and the like.
I really loved some of the ideas here. Notably, the two pillars around which the world was made, the idea of human settlers leaving to enter reality, and returning to the heavens upon death, and the idea of once corruption-wild beasts being embraced by the creator.
Lots of depth, lots of interest, and it all felt real. Great stuff.
Third Place- @Aley
I can't stress enough how difficult a choice it was between this piece and featherstone's. In the end, I had to go with the gut. While not as lengthy, and not having as much depth, I felt there were enough original and interesting ideas here that it just outmatched Feathers. The Houses, the transfer of magic by books mistaken as holy texts. It's all quite interesting, it hints at something bigger, and I liked a lot of it. The only place I felt it fell down was the Pantheon, but I think that the cultures and ideas surrounding these Gods are just as important as the Gods themselves in the end. The link of magic to the religion was also something I quite liked.
Fourth Place- @featherstone9086
Unfortunately, feather is out of the competition this round. I'd like to stress how close this was. Feather's piece was also pretty fantastic. I really appreciated how diverse and interesting the Pantheon was. The only real reason this lost was I felt the rest lacked a lot of the depth I was looking for. I felt that the Rituals and culture surrounding these Gods lacked the intrigue and creativity I was looking for. Other than
that, it was fantastic, though.
