What's the Hardest Part?

41 posts in this topic.

  1. Like the title suggests, what do you think is the hardest part of writing a novel?

For me, I have a hard time sitting down to actually write. It's almost like procrastination, even though I usually want to work on my novel. When I actually sit down and write I'm usually alright, though.
  2. The hardest part for me is liking what I write, or getting my writing to a point where I don't just want to trash it. It takes me rewrite after rewrite, but sometimes I can get it. Actually, that's why I originally joined YWS--for help in that area.

    I find music helps immensely.
  3. For me it's accepting that I can write okay-ly, and liking the story(s) I'm writing, and forcing myself to actually write. I'd rather tell someone what the stories about and have them write it for me.

(I also find music is amazing when writing or drawing.)
  4. The hardest part for me is the first couple chapters. I have everything in my head for the middle and the ending, but not for the beginning. I hate introducing things and people. I'd rather just start writing the whole thing from the middle.

And I agree with Vanadis and meggwriting: music is awesome to write with.
  5. The hardest part of writing? Without a doubt, WRITING.

Like Lauren, I too want to write most of the time. But that doesn't stop me from sitting down with the notebook and pen and then just staring off into space for a while, thinking about when dinner is, or how long I should 'write' before I go do something else, or what's on TV, etc. etc. etc.

Music = <3 <3 <3 A lot of my motivation for writing is, in fact, music. If I want to go listen to a CD, really badly, that means it's time to go write while listening to that CD. ;)
  6. Haha, totally agree with silentpages on that just writing is the hardest part of a novel. ^^ I always get distracted from my novel (for example, YWS is a huge distraction ;) ). I also can have a hard time just planning my novels out.

Urgh. Music? I can't concentrate with it on. xD
  7. For me -it's weird- I can get the first chunk of it completely wiped out, good bases, good writing, and then, poof! I'll have no idea what to do. I'm an awful novel planner, and I'll know what I want to do, but have no way to get to that point.

I call it Writer's Wall- you know what you want, but can't get there.
  8. I have that issue too!
  9. Not giving up or going to chase that "shiny new idea" that pops up every few pages or so. Also going forward even when you hate it.

Music--maybe when editing a first draft for plot. Never when actually writing because I can't concentrate.
  10. Writing something that fits the context perfectly and sounds just the way I like it. Sometimes it's just getting an actual idea that will work.

I love using music! Sometimes it distracts me XD. But most of the time it helps me write more and gets ideas into my head, particularly if the moods of the piece and my writing are the same.
  11. the hardest part for me is coming up with the details and subplots. Then i start to feel like it's bad and then i wanna change it....it's awfull!!!!!
  12. Staying focused on this novel, on the plans that I've made for it and the goals that I've set for myself.
  13. Actually finishing the novel, I have everything done but I just can't write up the end. Its so frustrating!
  14. The first three chapters always leave me wanting to abandon the whole novel completely - it frustrates me to have to introduce my characters, when I already know them so well. And the beginning is the part of the book that, if it isn't great, it can be a writer's doom. I know I don't read books if the beginning isn't somewhat enticing.

And, aye, music. It's given me some of the best plot twists...and even a few stand-alone story ideas!
  15. Definately the beginning chapters. I have a ton of events planned out in my head for the middle and at least five ways the novel could end...but no beginning.

It takes me five billion tries to finally get the first chapter to sound right.

And then there's always the evil that is trying to figure out how to lead up to those events. >.>

And yes...music is magical, most of the time. I also find that watching a few movies that take place in the era that my novel takes place in will inspire me. Like watching the show about Robin Hood yesterday has massively inspired me. xD
