Well, "Herobrine" was actually a little prank a YouTube LPer played on his viewers, I think. It's said that he started out as a re-textured door. However, later he became very popular, and more people added to the story, saying that they've seen him. The Minecraft crew also adds the line "Removed Herobrine" to the bottom of their list of changes every time there's an update, but Notch himself has stated that there is no such entity in the codes itself.
So if you really ask me, I'd say that Herobrine is actually fanon, not canon. Though, I enjoy stories about him anyways.
p.s. Have you guys seen the Fallen Kingdom music trilogy, hosted on CaptainSparklez's YouTube channel?
It features a continuous story, and Herobrine is in every one of the three videos XD -
