Cabin Projects

  1. The Camp YWS cabin projects are a chance for users to do something fun for YWS, but you already knew that part didn't you? What you didn't know was the details. So far, two cabins have attempted to complete cabin projects within a week. The hardest thing to do was to come up with the ideas.

The reason why is because this is a blank slate essay. Your teacher says write an essay for 200 points, with 5,000 words minimum, and dismisses class. Now you're stuck attempting to come up with what you can write about. It's the same thing with the cabin project. Although we have basic suggestions for things you can do, they won't be nearly as interesting as what you could pick yourself.

So instead of giving you the suggestions about what you could make, we're going to give you suggestions about how you can make it.

First thing first, you have until Wednesday to brainstorm ideas. Write down any ideas you have about the cabin project and submit them to your peers. If they can't use the idea, they'll probably include it somehow, so don't be shy or ever think your idea "won't work." We can find a way, especially if you really want to use it.

On Wednesday your cabin councilors will be pushing you to develop the idea into something that can be used to improve or help YWS and start preparations for it. The main thing will be listing what needs to be done, who can do what, and creating project leaders so that each part is completed on time.

Friday is the panic day, or rather, the day that the cabin projects really really need to be mostly complete. The goal is to have one cabin post on Saturday, and the other to post on Sunday, so Friday needs to be the day for discussing who will post what, when will it be posted, and what sort of things need to be finished afterwards.

Saturday and Sunday are the last days of camp so that's cleaning up your bunk, packing away your memories, and presenting the cabin projects.
  2. Am I on the right forum? No one's replied...

I thought we could aim to post something nice on the wall of EVERY single YWS member, such as an inspirational quote or just a compliment about their works. But if it has to be a writing task, I think time travel sounds fun as some sort of topic.
  3. Every single YWS member? Is that even possible? xD I think it is too much, but I guess what we should do is something like that, not a writing task. Complimenting people sounds nice.
  4. Can we do something wonderful...like designing a bunch of trophies(...or..badges...or whatever??) for some nice titles??

    YWS Best Awards Winners 2013

See those titles and those wonderful people(excl. me >.>)?? We really need to make something for those titles...it will be so nice to have symbol of their achievements hangin' in their trophies section...I mean different people bag those titles every year and it would be very nice to give them something as a memento(?)
  5. If you start posting on everyone's wall then it can become spam, and some people don't like getting complements just because they're humans. I know one girl at school who sees the stickie-notes posted around on the walls that say "inspirational" quotes like "You're beautiful" or "You're an amazing person" and she just gets angry because while it's a nice gesture, she feels it's a shallow gesture considering what good they could be doing at hotlines, or other personal outreach programs.

I fear that if we did something like that, the reaction would be similar for some people and they'd consider it spam. For one thing, not everyone is going to believe the same inspirational stuff that you put up because of differing cultures, and for another, we don't know how they react to complements.

As for the idea of making awards, that is a plausible idea, but who has Photoshop to make the badges?
  6. I like the badge idea as well, but it would only really be plausible if we had some artists who can art. xD (Alright, alright, since this is a writing site I'll put that phrase in actual English. '...had some artists who can do digital badges.') And even then, it would be more of an individual activity opposed to a cabin one; even if we all helped brainstorm about what the badges would look like.

Personally, I don't have photoshop - though I do have a few alternatives that I use for digital editing and stuff; though I can't do badges or anything that looks vaguely official for the life of me. :P

As for ideas, I've been brainstorming a few over the last few days. A lot of it is just what came off the top of my head (I thought I had a good one, but I forgot it), so bear with me. c:

    - Maybe we could put together a Scavenger Hunt of sorts? This would probably take a lot of organization, but we could go through a bunch of different texts written by authors here and (with their permission) use the texts and pick out different clues that could lead to some greater goal. This would probably be difficult and complicated, but perhaps worth expanding upon?

    - I'm a very competitive person, so when I brainstorm I tend to think competition (hence the Scavenger Hunt and this). We could put together a thread that had a bunch of different 'challenges' on it, with an allotted amount of points for each challenge. There could be a whole lot of challenges for different types of people even. For example;
Task One: Review 5 works in the green room, and post their links.
Task Two: Make a video of you lip-syncing to *insert song title here*
Task Three: Write a review with exactly 1023/interchangeable number words.
Task Four: Make an image (digital or traditional) showcasing an Alpaca eating cotton-candy.

    - I love to roleplay. It is one of those things I do that got me into creative writing in the first place. Could we create a site-wide roleplay? :O (A lot of brainstorming and expansion would be required here)

    - We could have, like, a play production thing? We could have people tape their voices and send them in (I might be able to do some video editing and stuff, if somebody joined me) if we think of a story line and stuff, and we can have a site-wide play of sorts! We can think of plots and characters and awesome things like that. :3 Then if anybody is particularly arty, we could have an animation put together for the background...

    - I had one or two more I think, but I ran out of time to write them (sleep is calling). xD
  7. It IS possible to do the badges idea. I was talking to the amazing Hannah and she assured me that it would be possible. As for it being a group project instead of just someone with photoshop [I do have it if you guys need me to do it.] it would be an endeavor to find/plan what images to put on the badges for each thing. The person making them would need suggestions about that, and that and because there are so many, it would be possible to break up our small club into groups to decide on sections of badges and what images they need. That would make it easier on the person making them, AND include the entire group.

Amoniel, while it is possible to post your voice on YWS, a lot of people aren't comfortable doing it, so I would caution away from doing activities that would require posting pictures of yourself, recording yourself, or that sort of thing. Also not everyone is working on a computer, or a surface that has an image creator, so we would have to be careful about what tasks we wanted people to do.

Scavenger hunts can be a lot of fun, and although they do take some time to plan, we do have a week still.

Making a site-wide Storybook could be a lot of fun.
  8. I REALLY like the badge idea. All of us can plan the topics and find the images while the Photoshop people can create the badges. It would be really nice to recognize some of the great authors out there in a new way.
The scavenger hunt sounds cool, too!
And as for the play production, I for one wouldn't be comfortable with recording my voice.
  9. I don't understand the scavenger-hunt thing the best, can you explain? Sounds interesting. Roleplay idea is cool too, we could adjust Dungeons and dragons to be playable on yws somehow? Id love to be able to play it online, gathering with friends is pain.
  10. What's that?
  11. Dungeons and Dragons is a game where one person basically crafts the world, the monsters, and decides all the nit-picky stuff, along with rolling dice. Other players call this person the Dungeon Master. They lead the other players on a quest of some sort. The other players provide reactions to things the Dungeon Master says and try to slay the dragons etc. while the DM rolls dice to determine if what they say actually happens or not.

In this manner a story is built. There's a lot of technicalities about what your character has, how many points they can have to distribute between their chances of success, and so on, so forth, but for the most part it is the original Role Play.

We could actually do this in Chat. It's been done before.
  12. I know, but I think I've seen people play it somewhere on the internet in a different manner, basically each of players would write down their actions and DM then decides whats happening. I can't remember the actual way it happened. Guess actual dungoens/fights would need people to be together.
  13. I still support the badges idea...no offence but we could really nail that one! Like if those are accepted...they will stay in YWS forever (i.e. if YWS badges are not revised now and then lol) Also in each of the badges we could put in a tiny symbol or sign somwhere which would signify that our camp did those :-) :-) There are eleven people in the camp and we can easily divide the work...those who cannot draw digitally can suggest how to make the badges...they can even post scans of hand drawn ideas...:-) :-)

The other ideas are cool too and they sound fun as well but our camp has only 11 ppeople with three days in our hands...will those three days be enough to write up and do a play orrr...do a magazine...its possible but we all will need to work as a team...which would have been easier if we all knew each others strengths and weaknesses and were ready to cover those for each other...

Roleplay does not really sound that hard but it will take time...
  14. My vote goes for the badges. It seems like the best option because it could really help YWS become an even better site. We'll be working hard to help acknowledge all those amazing writers out there!
  15. Alright, I guess I'll support the badges as well. c: I personally cannot do any sort of art, but I'll try and be a source of inspiration to those who are doing the actual drawing. :3
