Have you ever set out to draw a picture, done the first few lines wrong, then screwed it up in anger and thrown it at the next parent, pet or sibling who comes in the door?

It's a cruel thing really.

There is this thing that loving parents do when they find out they're going to have a baby- they dream. The dream about everything. By the time that little critter is ready to pop, it's parents have already decided on the hairstyle of the first day of school and what to buy as a graduation gift and what wisdom they'll pass down on the night before the wedding.

But then, say, a few months, maybe a year or two after birth something is amiss. This baby isn't like other babies. They go to the doctor and suddenly their dreams are shattered.

This child is blind. Or they have autism. Or some life threatening disease. What if this child might never go to school or graduate or get married, or even grow up.

Does this child then get abandoned or neglected because they don't follow the route that their parents wanted them to follow?

Plots are the same. We start off with all these beautiful ideas of how we want them to go, and then when we realise it won't work out we can feel that need to abandon them and try again.

Don't give up.

Writing a novel is hard. That's why of all the people who set off to write one, so many fall by the wayside. If we all abandoned our children when they started to stray from the path we want them to live then we would be a nation of orphans.

If it's not working, then figure out why. If a blind child can't read or write then you teach them to sing. If an autistic child can't love, then you teach them to do so by loving them until your heart aches.

Often you just need to let go, take it a day at a time, and accept that just because things don't go the way you want them to, doesn't mean they can't surpass our expectations. Then, when you look back, you'll keep the things you like the most and forget the things that in hindsight don't really matter any more.

The most beautiful things in this world are the ones that survive through tears and toil.

Stay strong, keep writing, don't give up. You're not called Wary Warriors for nothing.
