This is the place for prompts and mini-challenges (i.e., "write a story in a different POV then you're used to"). You can come here if you're looking to grow as a writer, or just simply want to challenge yourself.

Prompts will be given every two weeks, with a date that your piece MUST be finished by, as well as specifications. Basically:

"Prompt: Write a piece about blah blah and so forth.

Rules: Must be finished and handed in by Blah Blah month on Blah Blah date, please. Must be rated [insert rating here] or less. Has to be under blah blah amount of words and et cetera number of pages."

People that choose to write something with a prompt and hand it in on time will be eligible to win first place. The winner will be chosen within a week of the contest ending. Sadly, no prizes... yet. Just the satisfaction of knowing your piece was "the best."

Mini-challenges are given once a week. You don't need to submit your finished product here, and it will not be part of any contest. Unlike the prompts, mini-challenges are just for fun, not competition. You may give a link to your finished piece here, if you want to show it off, but it will not be in the running to win any title.

If you have any questions, feel free to post! If not, I should have the first mini-challenge and prompt up and running soonish.

Can I post a prompt? If so:

Prompt: Write a piece using Shakespearian language.

Rules: Must be finished and handed in by the middle of March, please. Must be rated 12 or less. Has to be under 3,000 amount of words and 5 number of pages.

I need to do the m'self sometime.

@icannothearthings, I was planning on being the only one to do prompts, but I don't see why others can't help out, too.

So, anyone else that would like to give a prompt as icannothearthings has done is welcome to! Otherwise, the next one (from me) should be up tomorrow or Monday.

Good idea, by the way! I'll be interested to see where people take that Shakespearian-language theme.

Mini-Challenge

~Write a story from the POV of the opposite gender then you're used to working with; so if you write about guys, do a piece from a girl's perspective, or vice versa~

Alternately, if you write from both genders all the time, try this:

~Write a story from the POV of an animal or inanimate object~

~READY FOR A PROMPT?~

Prompt: Write a short story about a figure from history (example: Cleopatra), but be as crazy and wild with it as you can (example: Cleopatra invents a time machine in ancient Egypt and is transported to modern-day Scotland, where she must slay the Loch Ness Monster). Don't worry about it being historically accurate, just have fun! (Unless historically accurate stories are more fun to you.)

Rules: Must be finished and handed in by February 24th, please. Must be rated 16+ or less (i.e., no F-bombs or graphic sex scenes/sexual content, but minor swear words are allowed). Has to be under ten pages (no word limit so long as it does not exceed ten pages). If your story is a full ten pages, it must be broken up into two parts, with each part being five pages.

Exceeding ten pages will mean immediate disqualification.

You can post your story here by copying and pasting it in, but only if it's short. If it's a few pages, you must post it as you normally would, through the Publishing Center, and post the link to it to this thread (not the club wall, please).

If you don't post a link to it, at the very least PM me so I know you're participating.

If it's short enough to copy and paste here, please do so with the title and spoilers (which is "[ spoiler ]" at the beginning, minus the spaces, and "[ / spoiler ]" at the end, also minus the spaces).

First and second place winners will be selected within a week of the contest ending. First place will win:

300 Points and Three Reviews by Me

Second place will be awarded:

100 Points and Two Reviews by Me

Anyone that wants to judge can PM me. Winners will be selected based on creativity, originality, technical flawlessness (a lack of typos/grammar missteps/punctuation problems), character development, and pacing.

So, I put the end date in my above post, but in case it wasn't entirely clear:

All stories for the above contest should be submitted by February 24th, your local time, and no later.

Sooo, by "local time," I mean when it's midnight on February 23rd in your area, the contest is officially over.

But I have a contest idea of my own I'd like to throw out first. Here goes.

RobinSparkles's Super Amazing Contest: Friendly Fanfic & Friend Appreciation!

Prompt #1 : Write a story about someone else's characters—but someone that's not super famous. Like, for example, writing a story based on Twilight characters or Harry Potter characters? Nope, that won't work. Writing a story about someone on here's characters? That's right.

Obviously, only do this if you have permission from the original writer. Give them credit in the beginning and story description, and when you submit your story here, tell us whose work you're basing it on. Get it? Got it? Good!

The Always Fun Rules: There are no rules! Ha ha, just kidding. There's always rules.

1. If the original writer tells you they'd rather not have their work fanfic-ified, you are not allowed to use their material and characters. Period. Doing so against their wishes warrants disqualification.

2. Give the original author credit! Lots and lots of it! I already covered this one, but again, give the writer a mention at the beginning of the piece, along with maybe a link to the original story? If it's on YWS, anyway, if it's one of your real-life friend's stories and not posted here or anywhere else, that's fine.

Also, since their not celebrities and their works aren't known, most of us probably won't know their characters or story lines. So if you could give us a brief summary in the beginning or outline of their plots and characters, that'd be great. (In fact, it's kind of necessary. Not doing this will ding your overall score a bit.)

And don't worry—the synopsis won't count toward your overall word allotment, so it can be as long as you want and doesn't matter!

3. Can be rated however you want, with as many swear words as you'd like, just make sure to put the rating here if you post the link to it to this forum. Something like: "Warning: the following is rated 18+ for dark themes and mature content."

Must be under 2,000 words and submitted by February 20th, 12:00 midnight PST.

Prompt #2 : Write a poem based on one of your friends/girlfriend/boyfriend/family member or in their honor.

Rules: Just write something about someone you love, in honor of Valentine's Day (and yes, that includes a platonic kind of love!). No real rules, other than the end date of the contest being February 15th. The poem can be as long as you want... well, so long as it's not a novel.

Oh, and if anyone wants to submit their works to be fanfic-ified, you can! Post a link to your portfolio to this forum. But remember, doing that will be giving the other users on here permission to write about your characters. Make sure you understand are okay with that before giving your permission!

And to everyone else thinking of entering, keep in mind that, though the end date has been pushed back a bit, there is still an end date! Get to work on your stories because March 10th is just around the corner!
